I'd love to be able to get my hands on the original 'Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain' tell you how well that fits but its constantly AWOL, may actually be easier to snag the PSX version and run it in an emulator, although I have a feeling it may be more of a dark Zelda-like

Vampire:The Masquerade starts solo but you DO acquire other party members before long, I've not played Bloodlines yet but I hear its very good
Ooh - Bloodnet?

There must be some dark and scary community made modules for the NWN game too right?
Klumpen the "bullshit" in Valdain's post was referring to slogging away for 6-odd hours trying to get a game to run ;) We've all been there and it's a good thing too because then this wonderful site wouldn't exist! "Wait I don't have to download shady emulators from some guy named 733t$k177s? I don't have to mess with deep registry keys and subfiles that will destroy my entire OS if I type 1 instead of 0? I can just slide over 3 bucks and PLAY THE FREAKIN' GAME??? Sign me up!"

Your feeling is correct. Blood Omen plays like a mix of Zelda and Diablo, but set within a pseudo-lovecraftian universe with vampiric and proto-gothic elements. It's also more Zelda than Diablo, mind you.

Don't get me wrong, it's a very good game, but with time it has been elevated to "classic underdog myth" status, and honestly I don't think it is that good, Amy Hennig did a way better job moving the series forward with Soul Reaver, even if Crystal Dynamics ditched the old-school isometric perspective in favor of the typical 3D 3rd person action-adventure engine of games released back then.

You can still get Blood Omen legally without paying a fortune for a boxed copy online, if you have a PS3 the game has been released in the PSN Classics Store (still plagued by the original PSX horrendous loading times), but if you don't, or don't feel like investing money to play it, then what you proposed still works, at least it lets you try the game and see for yourself that it isn't as good as people make it out to be.

Klumpen0815: Using Windows 8 and Mac... oh dear...
...
Win8/Mac-user

Fenixp: Well you're so much better, using a preferred operating system for a judge of character :D

avatar
Klumpen0815: And why do you consider Inquisitor to be unbalanced?
avatar
Fenixp: Inquisitor is fucking unbalanced, and I say that in spite of loving Inquisitor. Playing some classes is far easier than the others, especially the Priest who just becomes unstoppable towards the end. There are spells in the game which render some skills completely useless - and there are skills in the game which are just utterly useless by their own merit - and I'm not even talking about the fact that the game is full of difficulty spikes. Inquisitor is just about as unabalanced as you can humanly get.
I was referring to the now 8 hour trying to get the game running. It ended yesterday after the Windows xp computer I have doesnt have internet. It can run the game but it fails to run because you need internet for the download.

The Mac wont run the game and oh well.
The Windows 8 installs the copy I hawked on internet of Diablo 1 and Hellfire but stops and says incompatable.
The windows xp I purchased for $50 3 years ago would run and is best bet, however it is an office computer and I have no idea how to get internet on it. Its fast as shit though for xp. All I really need to do is get this download to connect and then the internet is not needed on xp comp. Since its so outdated its a complete clusterfuck.

On top of that, this would be circumvented as well when diablo 1 cd I have which is new could be found. I brought that over to parents house and got there and found a rage against the machine cd in place.

This has been the biggest attempt to get things going ever.

valdaintheking: Inquisitor is not hard but unbalanced and take 15 hits to kill bats.

The Games I want to play that are somewhat like this are Diablo 1 Hellfire. However I cant because Windows 8 wont let me play it.

Klumpen0815:
avatar
valdaintheking: Mostly, but I doubt any of the games mentioned would work on any of my 4 pc/macs. I just spent 6 hours trying to sift through bullshit. Then getting diablo 1 hellfire only to find out it doesn't install on windows 8. What a waste.

So Basically Diablo 1 is the only survival Rpg of its kind. Kind of lame.
avatar
Klumpen0815: With "bullshit" you mean the suggestions made from nice people here?
No single thanks for the tries of helping here but calling it bullshit? Wtf did I just read?

Using Windows 8 and Mac... oh dear...

And why do you consider Inquisitor to be unbalanced? I didn't need 15 hits to kill a bat, maybe it's too complicated for you if you consider Diablo to be a hard RPG although it's an easy (but beautiful) roguelike.
Good games take time to get into, I don't know "Demise: Rise of Ku'tan" and prefer isometric perspective, but it may be the same there.

avatar
Crosmando: Tbh I don't know how anyone could classify Diablo as "survival", I mean you kill *everything* and become completely powerful in the game.
avatar
Klumpen0815: I don't understand that either.
A survival game is defined by staying a weak person trying to slip through, like in Penumbra.

The whole thread just seems to be meant as a rant from an unfriendly and unthankful Win8/Mac-user, hopefully I am wrong.
I will give Inquisitor another try because you said its good. I tried a paladin before but got stomped. I'll do a little research and find a good melee class. I usually only play melee chars.

The best way would be to set up a virtual machine with a virtual Win98-SE or WinXP-SP1, Win7 had this function integrated and it's a standard function of all the major Linux distros (Virtual Box), although Linux users often do not even need to set up a virtual machine for old Windows games thanks to the WINE compatibility layer.

There are solutions for Win8 too:
http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/install-windows-xp-in-windows-8-client-hyper-v/6732/

Hopefully the Diablo-HD-Mod posted above will run natively on newer systems as well,
though I still use WinXP 32bit for gaming because I do not care as much for new games with all their DRM.

PS: I finished Inquisitor as a Paladin and yes, it's quite hard. I can understand if people get frustrated, I am still happy that I played it further though.

Oh I DID mean play the PSX version in an emulator from the original media, purchased second hand, wasn't suggesting torrents or anything!
(TECHNICALLY still a bit shady because of the BIOS ROMS but you've got to draw the line somewhere)
try Soulbringer, it has a very similar feel :)
Anyway, I never had the chance to play D1 at higher difficulty (due to the old restriction), so I'll have to test it too in the future (ahh, I already feel that good nostalgia taste). Maybe with HF expansion or Hell mod afterwards.
:D

valdaintheking: Replaying Diablo 1 simply because NO OTHER rpg has similar or comes even close the terror in the game. Diablo 2 was a great game too, but it wasnt scary at all. It was more action/rpg than survival horror rpg. If Resident evil was an rpg that would where its at it damnit.
They're on blizzard.com but I wouldn't expect to find them anywhere else such as on gog.com as Blizzard grips their games with a tight fist and keeps them close to home, uninterested in selling them through other distribution channels. Unfortunately, their games are popular enough and sell enough through their own store that they're unlikely to change this way of distributing their games more or less exclusively anytime soon. A few of their games are sold via Amazon and a few other retailers but you essentially just get a game code usable on battle.net to register the game so it's really a one show pony.

GOG.com can knock on their door month after month, approach them at conferences like GDC and E3 etc. year after year, but it's ultimately Blizzard's choice whether they want to keep the goods to themselves or branch out to other distribution platforms such as GOG and unfortunately they don't seem too interested. They don't even sell any of their games on Steam so I doubt we'll ever see them here. It's really too bad though as it'd be great for people to be able to grab all their classics DRM-free.

Who knows, perhaps GOG's rise will help the industry to see that DRM isn't the solution to the problem and maybe they'll eventually come around and change their way of doing things but there's no way to force them to do it so we're stuck with what we get pretty much. All we can do is vote with our wallets and spend the money on GOG.com that we might otherwise have spent buying Starcraft II or Diablo III etc. Not sure that'll make a loud enough message though with their massive popularity but it's the thought that counts. :)
I'm not really a Diablo fan and I didn't find it that horror-like. In fact, for an RPG, I believe Diablo 1 is overrated.

Anyway, you might want to try Divine Divinity, from what I saw you said about Geneforge or maybe Darkstone.

Also, Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2 can be played with only 1 character. I don't think the same applies to Icewind Dale series.

You might also want to try Dungeon Hack.
Nobody has mentioned the Titan Quest series yet, so I figured I might. I don't think it will be as dark as what you are interested in, though I was entertained by its use of various mythologies, and the game does generally get more challenging over time, particularly the dragon men in the third chapter. Subsequent playthroughs on higher difficulties unlock special boss monsters to fight as well. And if you get the expansion, the fourth act takes place in the underworld of Greek mythology and includes fights with the likes of Charon and eventually Hades.

Though the company that produced Titan Quest, Iron Lore Entertainment, went under around 2008, they're now back as Crate Entertainment, working on a new game called Grim Dawn, set in a dark world loosely based on Victorian England. The game is currently in Alpha and incomplete, though you can get a taste for it on Steam.

Others which might interest you include The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, Din's Curse, Torchlight, or even Hammerwatch. There's also Throne of Darkness, but I think you end up controlling a party of four samurai.
