Very nice responses from everyone, I appreciate your participation.

For me personally, the most rewarding RPGs for this kind of freedom have been Arcanum, Fallout 1 & 2, and Geneforge. While I loved playing Might & Magic 3 through 5, there wasn't really much in the way of actual role-playing, and even then (as was mentioned earlier) I felt somewhat "punished" for not taking the "lawful/good" choices when presented with them.

I play the good guy with a loose sense of property rights. i.e. I'll steal a little if no one's looking.
Reading A Song of Ice and Fire influenced me to play chaotic neutral characters, in the style of the almighty Ramsay Bolton :D

When I think of a true RPG it isn't on a computer, but pen and paper.

ChaunceyK: ...
Lazarus - His goals are simple: amass personal power & money at all costs.

Barymore - He's a very virtuous soul: always tries to do the "right" thing, although he realizes that sometimes rules may be bent to ensure the greater good.

Koll/Kollette (sometimes I play this character as a male or female) - Stealthy and sneaky: wants to learn as much as possible, not above eliminating those who truly deserve it (or simply stealing from them), has a soft-spot for innocent folk (such as children), generally concerned mostly about personal survival without taking sides.

...
I should try doing some of this stuff, up till now I just bang my fists on the keyboard and hope something happens.

Oh, that's not entirely true- I also bang the controller on my knees when I play those types of games :D
