Licurg: You know what would be awesome? Total War: King of Dragon Pass
Well anything would synergize perfectly well with Total War: ______________

Total War: Civilisation

Heck just try to imagine:

Total War: Mount&Blade

or even

Total War: Carmageddon

Total War: Kirby's Adventures...

Hell Yeah...

Sorry off topic, but I simple had to add that...

Oh back on topic:

After reading through these posts:

Do you think "Dragon Age 2" can be regarded as Empire Building game, as you slowly build up your reputation and standing and get more and more influential?

overread: Total War just needs dragons

and goblins
and griffons
and gryphons
and serpents
and fantasy
Sounds like the Third Age mod for Medieval 2.

tsgnurk: Im sorry, but wasn't the question "greatest/favourite empire building game"?
Doesn't really make sense to mention a game whereas the empire building makes up for less then 25% of the game, i mean im note mentioning "dynasty warriors empires" here, because in the end of the day, the thing you do most in the game is run around with a unrealisticly large weapon and cut&slash 100s of foes.

SweatyGremlins: Oh it's a bit more than 25% in M&B. Dynasty Warriors is a Hack n' Slash with very small managing features, M&B can't really be played by ignoring the managing side of things. You need to feed your army, earn the money to pay for their salaries; to do this you get involved in trade, property, labor, slavery, politics, and war.

It's all very organic too, like older PC strategy series. It plays like a fleshed out Total War game for me, especially with good mods like Brytenwalda.
Im not saying theres no trade, but the complexity of the trade, and management is so low that its hardly any different from DWE, even when i played the game for the first time udnerstanding the management was not something to drop time into at all.
i'm really surprised that only one person mentioned Galactic Civilizations II.
for me, this is by far my most favourite (galactic) empire building game.

That's not an empire sim - that's a space ship design sim in disguise as an empire sim ;)

designing ships is an important part of every career as an cosmic emperor ... you just can't conquer the galaxy and build an empire without cool looking ships ... you just have to kick ass with style! that's why you have to spend the whole night designing the newest fashion in flying weaponry. oh i'm so glad this game is not real time strategy, you just wouldn't have the time for the important things in world domination ... :)

For me the overall experience was the most important not only the gameplay and thus I had rated Pharaoh among empire building games but your point with FPS games is pretty strong and it can be expanded even further: adventure games may end up with ruling an empire... It appears that my definition of empire building games was too broad so now I have to withdraw my statement: Pharaoh is my favorite city (not empire) building game
