JRPG: Chrono Trigger.
2D WRPG: Baldur's Gate II or Fallout 2. Which one depends on whether I'm in a Horrid Wilting or a Gauss Rifle mood.
3D WRPG: Fallout 3. The story was good but not great, but the experience of walking around Falloutified versions of places I've been in real life was really special, and I don't want to think how much time I've spent exploring the world, looking at all the little details the developers put into the game just because they could. One of the best soundtracks out there, too.

The truth is, I'm not even a big fan of the Fallout series. I just identify myself with the rain of radioactive dust.

Plus I only said that it's the best overall RPG. There's not many of those.

I would say the RPG-7 is the best overall.

I enjoyed all the Fallouts, but my favorite is probably Fallout NV. Spent a shitload of time in that world. Just love the atmosphere, music, NPCs, weapons, everything. Very immersive, at least for me

On the other hand, I spent so much time just trying to get the game behave itself that immersion was an impossibility. If I am presented with objectively undeniable proof that New Vegas is the best overall RPG, I'm going to fucking quit gaming.

Fallout 1, Fallout 2, and Morrowind.

See, this is the problem with asking what the "best" anything is. I see so many mentions of Elder Scrolls games, and I personally think they are horrible, boring, uninteresting messes (no offense to any who like them as I am sure many feel the same about the Final Fantasy/Chrono games). My son, on the other hand, loves them. We both like Fallout 3 and New Vegas, though I thought New Vegas was a little hindered by its bugginess.

The best overall Role Playing game is the one You are enjoying the most in the moment, at that moment, and most importantly, the one You continue to go back to, to replay, over and over again.

As for the rest of us, it will probably be different than your best overall RPG. :P

Nah that's rubbish. My inventory size is ridiculously small and requires ridiculous amounts of micro-managing. Also the story line is pretty hum-drum with only a few twists. And as for dialogue, yeesh! It's like the actors are just making it up as they go along.

Other bad things: You can't save. You only play once. You don't get to choose your character. Your character can have inherent flaws that there is no way to overcome. Very limited special actions. Levelling up is mostly tedious and requires a lot of time... the list goes on. Frankly it's a wonder that it has so many players.
