I'm not sure why you mentioned MM after playing Grimrock. They're both fantasy, but that's about all they share.

Legend of Grimrock was a recreation of Dungeon Master. The gameplay and tile-movement are identical. DM was so awesome that it later inspired Eye of the Beholder, and later on Ultima Underworlds. DM can be found free online, so you can check it out if you like. I loved playing DM on the Atari ST, and also enjoyed EoB and UU years later. If you're looking for a copy of LoG to play, you can choose one of those.

As for MM, I've also played MM 1-9 as well as HoMM 1-3. For the MM games, there was a huge change in engine and graphics at MM 3, 6 and 9. MM 1 and 2 are black and white, while 3+ are color. Corak and Sheltem are in games 1-5, their story ending in 5. 6-8 are a new story line, which also includes HoMM 1-3. Almost everybody considers MM9 total garbage, and many ignore HoMM 4 and 5 in terms of story (don't know about gameplay). 3DO went under and sold the MM name to Ubisoft for a load of money, and Ubi promptly destroyed the value the name had. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is one example, having nothing to do with MM.

I loved the art of MM 3 back in the day, and enjoyed 4/5 together. 6 is perhaps my favorite. I only played 3-5 twice, but I played 6 many times. 7 was kinda nice, but I felt I was spending more time chasing after trainers than playing. 8 was smaller and a bit weird, and unfinished as well.

My suggestion is to look up some lets play videos and see what kind of graphics you can stand, and go from there.

Huh?
They are both in colour. MM2 is IMO one of the better looking games from the EGA era.
That's odd, I could have sworn they were B&W. It has been a long time since I played them, but still. I wonder what game I was thinking of.

Now that I've got 6 working and have played 7 a bit, I can compare a little: To be honest, 3-5 and 6&7 (and presumably 8) have really different feels. Although open world, the grid-based system and larger party of 3-5 make it feel more like a classic dungeon crawler, whereas 6&7 feel more like a more modern open world game (the 2D on 3D look is a little ugly, but whatever). The combat in 3-5 reminds me most of something like Dragon Quest, minus random encounters, actually. I'm enjoying both styles, so I'd definitely re-recommend the 6-pack so you get a sample of all the M&M varieties.

Maybe the Mac versions?

No... didn't play it on the Mac. I guess I was thinking of the early dungeons, or something. It would seem that Archibald has been tampering with my memories. I'll have to find some adventurers to get them back for me.
I would suggest the 6-pack since it offers the most value. Heroes 3 is awesome as well.

edit: Didn't notice this is an old thread. XD
