I have been following GOG and downloading games from GOG since their early days and wanted to know if anyone else remembers buying and downloading most of the games for around $1.99? Seems like nowadays , your lucky if you can find a game on sale for $1.99 !

Again, just an observation and in no way a slap to GOG...........as long as peeps are willing to pay the price, why not charge more!

The standard prices for old games have always been "free", 5.99 or 9.99. If they were cheaper when on discount.
But you came at the right moment to start a price discussion :-)

I could venture a guess that those cheap prices would not have aided GOG when trying to convince game developers to sell them the distribution rights to their games?

Edit: also for many of us, it is not about buying a new game, it is about buying the old games we used to play and loved but no longer function on modern operating systems. And also it is about not having to scramble around with the disk anymore.

So the real value of the game is in the asking of yourself, what is it worth to me that the game is fixed to work on modern operating system, and or what is it worth to me, not to have to scramble around with the disk anymore?

What? When were prices ever 1.99?

Maybe in the beginning, before there were indies or (oh my gog) new games in the catalogue, when only oldies were sold, games were 1.99, but since nowadays oldies are sold in bundles of three or more, those retail prices are long a thing of the past.

I've been here since just about the beginning at it was always $5.99 and $9.99 up until the point where they added new price points and indie games.

No kidding. I've seen a sale or two with this price but nothing regular. Shit I hope I haven't been blacking out again! :O

OP must be confused or indeed thinking of sales. And I recently saw some games for 1.49 on sale, so not sure what he's talking about.
Looked up some old invoices from 2011... yep, most games were $5.99 or $9.99. I just always bought most of them on sale.

When any given $9.99 game was promo'd at 80% discount?

But no, regular prices were never that low. In 2008/2009 many installers had ads for games at $4.99, but I think that was never actually used, and they decided on $5.99 instead. If I remember the legends correctly, payment hadn't been implemented at all in closed beta, so everyone got the games for free, and when a working payment system was implemented, open beta started with $5.99 and $9.99 (as well as a couple free games).
