rampancy: As xa_chan said, I think it can be argued that a lot of games that could be considered "retro" are far ahead of many current mainstream AAA titles in terms of plot, character development, narrative development, and pacing, among other things. Baldur's Gate II, and Icewind Dale for instance, still set the bar for me for judging many RPGs and cRPGs I've played.
true but in this generarion there are also games who will be an inspire to the future generarions. There were some games in this generation that were bad but had good ideas .
I wasn't around when some great games came out or just ignored them at the time. I probably first actively started retro gaming when I became a massive fan of LucasArts adventure games. Grim Fandango, which is still one of my favourite games, pretty much showed me that old games could be great, if not greater than modern games. Despite loving retro games, I think the vast majority of them do not age well and won't persevere with a game just because it has gotten praise for being revolutionary and significant if it's not any fun. I don't go out of my way to just play old games though, I enjoy quite a few modern games too (mostly Valve's).

Currently playing Mother 3, legally. Bought the game in it's box and it's in quite good nick considering it's just flimsy cardboard.

-Because I'm old enough to have played some of them when I was young.

-They don't make them like they used to. Games were harder and more complex. And thus more rewarding.

-GOG.com makes retro gaming very easy and cheap.

With that said I've become a bit of a graphics whore in my old age. The ugliest I can bare Is Might and Magic VI and that's probably because I played MM VII as a kid. The older games of the series are too ugly and clumsy and hard for me try to get in to them. However most of post 1997 games are just fine graphically, especially if they're 2d.

GameRager: They weren't that cheap when they first came out though....most retro titles(good ones) went for around 40 bucks years back when new.
Well, they weren't retro then, either. Now they are, at a low price. So yeah, price comes into it; what used to cost a couple days' wage is now available for the price of a decent six-pack. Perfect for budget (read: cheap-ass) gamers such as myself.
