I'm a qualified network administrator and am 3/4 of the way through a cisco certified network associate qualification and I have to say that you're spot on. Shit happens is basically the mantra of networking. In your case I'd not be surprised if it was channel interference from another nearby source, moving it might just have shifted it out of effective range of the other transmitter. You might want to download #inSSIDer and see if it can pick up many other networks in the area
