I often wondered how the term "poop deck" ever came about in references to ships. Are there any weird words or phrases that have made you stop and wonder the origins?

Every word and phrase invented by the current generation XD. But seriously, I do wonder how the word "faggot" meaning "a stick used to light a fire" or a "fire-lighter" became a slur against gay men? It is quite comical to think about, considering its original meaning.
"Half-tempted" - How can you be half-tempted? Either you're tempted or not...

"Disgruntled" and other words with "Dis" or "Un" or similar that isn't a real word without the prefixes. Did we drop out the usage of "Gruntled" and such, or did they never exist?

Quite simple, it is an anglification of the french word for stern.

And in Swedish it means Bassoon (slightly different spelling, but it is pronounciated roughly the same way)

You bassoon! It doesn't sound nearly as intimidating or derogatory XD. But I suppose one can twist the meaning of any word. The next time someone uses the word "faggot" in a derogatory manner in my vicinity, I shall ask them if they play the bassoon ;).

I, uh, think it's toes. A common surfin practice is to cut off your toes and hang them from your ears. This is a mark of a good surfer. Hence: Hang ten.
onomatopoeia

It's just plain fun to say.
