I'm looking for artsy / experimental video games with an emphasis on atmosphere or story.
This question / problem has been solved by Catshadeimage
Fatale, by Tale of Tales
Extremely short, emphasis 100% on narrative (almost zero actuall gameplay), definitely weird, definitely artsy and definitely experimental. Loved it.

I just passez this game, it was good :)
But, in the short experimental games, there is Today I Die and Passage

chautemoc: Edit: Oddworld, Myst/Uru, Another World, Psychonauts, Sanitarium, Feeble Files, Syberia, Longest Journey. Hopefully you like adventure games. ;)

Sure I love adventure games ! I already passed Sanitarium, Syberia (not really experimental this one) and The Longest Journey and tried Oddworld, Another World and Psychonauts... Myst seems a bit static for me, but maybe I'll play it. And for Feeble Files, it seems fun.
Zeno Clash and Rez seems just a bit too action oriented tough.
Digital: A Love Story, Echochrome and Fatale seem great reccomandations, thanks !
Edit: I don't why but I did nothing particulary and Catshade became the solution...?

It depends on where you draw the line between "artsy / experimental" and "pretentious." There are also many games that aren't especially groundbreaking in gameplay, but which put a lot of effort into developing an atmosphere.
Here are a few short freeware oddities that I enjoyed:
Illegal Communication - buried at the bottom of the Games page. A weird little abstract side-scroller where most of the gameplay is figuring out what you're actually doing.
Don't Look Back - a brief platformer that I found very affecting, inspired by Greek myth.
All Of Our Friends Are Dead - a bizarre run-and-gun shooter that's pretty much like playing somebody's nightmare.

I would say Zeno Clash and Rez are as much about gameplay as they are story/atmosphere/experimentation/weirdness/whatever. I haven't played the former so I can't say for sure, but for Rez, they blend together very well.
Be sure to check out I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream...it's one of a kind.
When I said Myst I meant the series. Try RealMyst -- it's not static.

Thanks ! I didn't knew them.
For the pretentious, I don't know why people can call a game pretentious when they aren't in the mind of the people who made the game... The Path, for example, is very often called pretentious, but in my opinion, they just seem to have fun making the game and didn't intend to make the masterpiece of the millenium.

I used to agree but having read their blog, one of the creators is really pretentious/condescending at times. I guess he means well, but that doesn't negate it. I was disappointed.

Echochrome looked great as a concept, but I never got the chance to play it. There's already a sequel for it, have to look for its name and which platforms are available other than the PSP.
Space Station Silicon Valley (N64)
A quirky little action/platformer from DMA Desgin (now Rockstar North)
Okami (PS2, Wii)
Seriously, if you have not played this beautiful piece of art yet, do so. Like right now.
Stretch Panic (PS2)
An interesting title from the early days of the PS2's life by Treasure. While it had a cool concept, it did not turn out to be such a good game.

That was...epic! Even got me 20 points. =) Loved the story and puzzles.

This looks interesting...Downloading.

Well, it's not old, but Killer7 definitely qualifies as weird. At first the story doesn't seem to make sense, but it all comes together by the end in the strangest way!
And-Kensaku , google and nintendo will partner for this game. Japan, of course.

Probably one of the most fucked up FPS games I've ever had a go at, everyone should try it at least once though :)

Rohan15: How is that game in terms of gameplay and replayability?

Not too bad. The tower challenges are worth replaying.
