Il-2 Sturmovik, Blitzkrieg, Silent Storm S2, and other War & Strategy games 60% off

This weekend, our [url=http://www.gog.com/promo/back_in_the_ussr_weekend_promo_16_11_12]"USSR Invades! War & Strategy Games" promo storms your screens with a tactical advantage of a 60% discount! GOG.com HQ has planned this sudden strike for weeks, and to ensure a totall victory we've allied with the Russians, and former Soviet republics. After all, it worked like a charm during the final days of World War II, and those developers and publishers excel in strategy and war games. Let's not waste time here and see what arrived in the reinforcements package from Russia (and former Soviet republics), with love.

For air support, we've got Il-2 Sturmovik, a highly praised title coming from the (sadly) almost extinct breed of realistic military aircraft simulations). Armchair generals will be extremely satisfied with Blitzkrieg Anthology and Blitzkrieg 2 Anthology--two feature-full RTS titles taking the realistic and historically accurate approach to the famous campaigns of World War II. Or if you like something less serious, but maybe even more challenging, try S2: Silent Storm Gold--a complex turn based strategy set in an alternative time-line, where the German Nazis excelled in technological advancement.

We're also happy to announce, that and [url=http://www.gog.com/gamecard/soldiers_heroes_of_world_war_ii]Soldiers: Heroes of World War II--two games that gone MIA for a little while--have made their way back safely into GOG.com catalog, and are reporting for active duty. Just in time for the promo!

Do you doubt the military (gaming) potential of Eastern Europe? Head out to our our "USSR Invades! War & Strategy Games" promo page to see at least 17 titles proving that it should not be taken lightly!

Last, but not least--here's our video summary of the week. In case you missed it, here's what's new!

Gonchi: Pretty sure I'll grab S2: Silent Storm Gold, kinda meh on the rest though.

Roman5: Grab Cossacks if you got the extra bucks for it, one of the best games from GSC
Yeah? RTS isn't really my genre, but I'll look into it.

Roman5: Makes me glad I picked up both of the Space Rangers games while they were on previous promos, I definitely did not see that removal coming
One of the best games I bought (unknowingly even) over the last few years on a random Xmas sale. Highly recommended. Hope GOG gets the Space Rangers HD version they're supposedly making.

F4LL0UT: I really don't like the music in the video. Reminds of some porno intro. I think the vids would be much better if the music somehow reflected the content, it would keep people more interested and even excited at times. You know, for example Shadow Warrior didn't seem half as badass as it is without its awesome main theme or at least some fast and strong music.

And as for the promo: epic. Will definitely grab a game or two. But sadly the "USSR attacks" thing made me think of several games that aren't on GOG yet such as Freedom Fighters, World in Conflict and the Red Alert series. :P
Who owns the rights to Freedom Fighters?

Square Enix

It was published by EA but I remember reading somewhere that Square Enix has the rights to the franchise by now. Not sure if it's true, though.

SCPM: Square Enix
I was kind of confused about this at first since the game was published by EA in NA but it was made by IO interactive and IO even published the PS2 version in europe
In my heart of hearts, I never thought we'd actually see Perimeter or Soldiers back here again. Neat! Do Obscure next.

Do you only say so instinctively because all other IOI games were published by Eidos/Square Enix or did you also read some news about Square Enix having acquired the rights to the franchise?

Edit: Okay, checked on Wikipedia - the article states that Eidos announced a sequel to Freedom Fighters at some point (just the way I remembered it). Weird stuff. :P

I recall that a sequel was planned by Eidos (now owned by Square Enix), but IOI instead made Kane & Lynch. =\ IOI has mentioned as recently as last year that they were interested in making a sequel, so I'm assuming there aren't any outstanding issues with the IP. But there's likely more to the story if no digital retailer is carrying the game at the present.
Nice, Etherlords went on sale quick enough for me to remember the marketing pitch from its release. Will buy as soon as I have checked the other games. :)

How does American Conquest compare?

Oh, I'd love to see World in Conflict and the Red Alert series here as well

SimonG: Well, apart from the fact that they are the only publisher that still uses Starforce,
but the StarForce version they use nowadays is a far cry from the pre-Windows 7 versions. it's basically a carbon copy of SecuROM and completely unproblematic.

as far as the current promo is concerned: f*ck yeah, Nival games on sale! and weren't Soldiers and Perimeter supposed to disappear?

I seriously enjoyed Fantasy Wars (which I got from USA for more than $70 - difficult TBS, lots of units, nor bad campaigns and very challenging if you wany to complete every mission with the limits of gold medals (means that usually you need to finish certain maps within set amount of rounds - lots of save/load). Definitely better than Elven Legacy, even with 3 DLCs.

Silent Storm is a great gem - still looks ok and is very interesting.

King's Bounty is a game which I finished 4 times and spent heaps amount of time on playing it. Same was with Armored Princess, not so much with Crossworlds and now Warriors of the North.... Life is tough and there is always so little time... This series has lots in common with Heroes of Might and Magic, but has more quests, humor and charm (and yes it is a bit childish, but it is very enjoyable and yet challenging).

SimonG: I like uPlay. And the regional restrictions of Steam games are far and few between. I buy 90% of my Steam games on Amazon.com.
...
Good for you; I'm not allowed to buy/rent games or series on Amazon.com because of my region.
