It's an excellent game is this. A combination of a space combat sim and an RTS game. You can play it in tactical view and real time, and you can jump in any ship and get stuck in on the action. The guy who's spent quite some time developing it has finally put it on kickstarter:

About time he did that. Up until this point, he's been releasing sporadic alphas of it for free download. You can download alpha 16 of the game on the main website:

Trust me, you will enjoy it if you like space sims or RTS games. It's a well made hybrid game, with none of that "bolted on" nonsense that many games fob players off with. I've started a "requested game" on it on GOG, because it's one place where the game belongs when it's finally completed:

Download the alpha, play it, back the kickstarter, and vote it up on here :)
watched some of the videos on the kickstarter, looks pretty cool
I've wanted a game that effectively combined space sim and RTS elements for a long time. I'll have to check this out and see how well it compares to the imaginary super-awesome game that lives in my head.
Im pretty sure Starshatter had a space combat RTS mix once you progressed far enough to be in command of things. I don't think it had resource management or ship construction though. It was way hardcore, and never sold well. The goal was to make a space combat equivalent of modern air combat simulators. Space sim fans seem to prefer more of an arcade experience though. This Void Destroyer game looks to deliver that experience, so hopefully it will sell better than Starshatter.
Hey guys thanks for spreading the word and for the kind words. I'm the dev behind the project.

I saw a StarShatter video after I started my project and got a bit worried, then realized that the game was oddly dead. I thought - great someone beat me to it and it looks awesome (this was earlier in the project when mine was all programmer art).

Strange because it looked good. I guess the hardcore market is hard to find.
I just hope that the general release of Void Destroyer encompasses more of space than the battles and mining around the asteroids that's in the alpha. There's nothing wrong with the alpha as it's good to play, but the final game needs to be alot bigger, with numerous systems, factions, etc...
Starshatter isn't too bad, but Void Destroyer does have the potential to be so much more.
skeecher - unfortunately its very unlikely that it will. Post release - that's the plan - but the initial commercial release will be pretty much like the alpha. Except - more ships, more enemies, more story, more sectors, more building platforms, and better controls (especially the tactical mode - better formations and AI) and polish.

The overall focus will be on combat.

Its just the reality of constraints of time - 1 man band.
I've been playing around with the Alpha a bit, and this definitely shows some promise. The shift between ships in combat isn't too jarring, and combat itself feels smooth if a bit simplistic. The two most obvious shortcomings at the moment are the minimal sound design and the somewhat awkward control scheme, but I'll definitely be keeping my eye on this one to see where it goes.
