Dr_Worm: They're even using GOG's old icons for some games. Check it:

http://puu.sh/9W84u/d9806b54bd.jpg

On the left is GOG's icon they used for Ultima Underworld 1+2's old (1.x) installer - the "shine" Photoshop overlay effect is a dead giveaway and it's on all their old icons.
Interestingly, their bundles don't seem quite the same as in GOG? For example, in your picture Origin sells Ultima V as a single game, while GOG has packed it together with Ultima IV and VI? Same for Ultima Underworld (as opposed to Ultima Underworld 1+2 bundle in GOG)? Or am I reading that wrong?

Oh well, meh. I guess it is fine they sell them too (their games after all), and it just reiterates how important it is for GOG not to limit themselves only to old games (as other stores are entering that market too, even the big publishers who have earlier supplied GOG with the old games).

Geri11: Which of course smart people won't do, because GOG is a lot more honest, has no DRM, and overall a much much better company. But they are going to make money out of it regardless.
But do these old games have DRM on Origin? I don't think they do. Not even Steam adds DRM to old DOS games. I don't even know if that would be possible.

Wishbone: Read MY post above ;-)

Grargar: Sneaky ninja edit. :P
Not my fault ;-) I did make a new post, but if less than 10 minutes have passed since your last post, and nobody else has posted in the mean time, the forum automatically stitches the two posts together.

MailBoxAssassin: Just logged into my Origin client for some Mass Effect 2 and saw this... is GOG now on Origin like Steam games used to be sold through Impulse???
avatar
darthspudius: How dare EA sell their games on their own client... just bloody awful!
Funny, I saw him making a question, not a judgement. So your childish sarcastic comment missed the mark.

Quite possible I think. You could always use some sort of wrapper for the game and put the DRM in the wrapper. Then pack up the game files in some sort of proprietary archive so they can't be used without the wrapper.

Mind you, that would be an awful lot of trouble to go to just to "protect" a game that has already been pirated to hell and back, so I doubt anyone would actually do it.

Wishbone: True, but for the American market (which is the most important), and for those games that are sold separately in both places, they are cheaper than GOG.
Why should the second largest market be the most important? Shouldn't we look at the largest market first?

Is there any particular reason for the deliberate lack of information in your post? If you think another market is larger/more important, why don't you say what it is? 10 out of 10 for "smug know-it-all" factor, but 1 out of 10 for moving the discussion along, I think.
It's just concept absorption. Companies do it all the time. Why work with an existing template developed by someone else when you can just steal the idea out of from under them and use predatory business tactics to take away their customers and profit? EA would rather steal GOG's concept than work with them in an open ended relationship.

Professional wrestlers steal each others moves, writers steal other writers' ideas, car makers steal other car makers' mechanics and features. Happens all the time. Is it honest or ethical? No. Does it work? Depends on the intelligence and awareness of the public. If informed of the theft and shady behavior, it can really backfire with the offending company. If not, well the way most businesses and governments look at it, it's out of sight, out of mind.

Why is it childish exactly? Like everything I say sarcastically on the board it's a bit tongue in cheek. Ofcourse you never seem to grasp that concept... ever! Yeesh!
I didn't know EA was doing the same thing, but I find it kind of funny that Steam is only recently putting out games that Gog has had for ages to try and get some sales out of them too. My question to add to this is, who didn't see this coming?

As ever with EA the evil is in the implementation rather than the concept
Selling their own games on their own site is fair dues but £3.99 for a freeware game? And calling the section 'Good Old Games' is just damn cheeky!

It's not like its Valve that are publishing the games themselves though - its companies like KISS Ltd and in addition to the old stuff Steam have been opening the flood gates to 'second tier' publishers like the 1C Company for their 2nd rate clones of games that were previously only available on places like Gamers Gate and an avalanche of 'Hidden Objects' games from people like the so called 'Strategy First' - so, by all mean criticize Steam for the sudden dip in quality control (personally I quite like the idea of being able to add ALL TEH GAEMS over there though) but to single out the old stuff is being a bit myopic...

Wow, it seems like you had no idea what I said. But by all means, do what it takes with your wall of text to make yourself seem like the intelligent one.

Wow I thought I was being pretty succinct - if you think THAT was a wall of text I worry for your level of literacy! (must... resist... Australian.. racial.. slur)
I was just taking issue with the part where you said "Steam is only recently putting out games that Gog has had for ages" because it sounded like you were saying that Steam/Valve themselves were conspiring to steal GOGs market when, to me, it just seems like Steam have lowered the barriers to entry, allowing people like KISS and 1C to get more stuff on over there...

Whatever the theory for bringing the new(old) games in is, it's all pure speculation and it will always be speculation until proven otherwise. Why would you need to resist throwing a racial slur at me exactly? Can't you contain yourself over a single comment from someone you don't know in the slightest? Someone who you think has poor literacy (again, basing this from a little, itty, bitty few lines of text)?
