It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Hello everyone,
I would like to update you on the latest changes to GOG Downloader (the optional app that can be used to download your GOG.com purchases).
We have just released an updated version (0.9.30) which includes three important things:
1. a faster app core (thx to updated Adobe AIR Runtime, and jQuery 1.3.3)
2. updated file resuming, witch will now allow:
- more reliable auto-resuming, witch should fix _some_ of the problems
- auto discovery of incomplete/complete files
3. an option to send bug report to gog.com
If you have the downloader already installed, you will be notified about the update next time you launch the app; if you don't have the app yet, check out the list of downloads in My Account page for any of your purchases)
2. UPDATED APP CORE
While updating our source code, we also updated all libraries involved which should make the whole app a bit faster and less resource hungry.
3. UPDATED FILE RESUMING
This was, and still is, the most important thing about the downloader. We have received numerous reports from our users, that there are issues with this, especially on slower, less reliable, connections.
The real problem with fixing this is actually recreating this situation, to have a peek at what's really causing this. We tried a lot of different setups, we've used faulty network hardware, we used cellphones as modems to access Internet, we tried disconnecting cables on different levels of the connection, we used software to slow the connection down, we tried downloading files to very slow hard drives, but so far we couldn't recreate problems that some of you were experiencing.
So, as the first step, we changed the way that files are handled, discovered, and resumed. It should help with at least some of the problems.
The second thing, was to enable the downloader app to discover files from previous sessions. This means that if you have an incomplete file backed up before the downloader encountered an error, you can copy that incomplete file into download folder, then add the game to the downloader again, and the app will continue from the incomplete file instead of starting at zero. This is hardly a resolution for the problem, but it will at least allow for some temporary workaround, until we get all the issues sorted out.
So if you have problems using the downloader, you can try to:
1. Start the download normally
2. From time to time, make a copy of the temporary files in the GOG Downloader downloads folder to a safe backup location
3. If the downloader encounters an error click "Send report" (more info below), and shut it down
4. Copy your backed up files back into GOG Downloader downloads folder
5. Relaunch the app, and resume the transfer (or add the game again using the website), the transfer should resume at the point of last backup
Please remember, that this is only a temporary workaround as we work on fixing all the real issues.
3. BUG REPORTS
As mentioned before, we are adding an option to submit bug reports straight from the downloader. Every time you encounter an error while using GOG Downloader, you will have an option to "Send report" to us - please click on it, as it is essential for understanding and solving the problems :).
The report includes:
* GOG Downloader application logs (detailed information about file transfers and errors)
* your gog.com user name
Report does NOT include:
* any personal or hardware info (no hardware logs, no apps list, etc)
We will keep these logs as short as possible and we'll be using them only to find & fix bugs in GOG Downloader. After that we will delete them. We won't spam you, won't spy on your system and won't create any stats regarding downloader and it's usage.

alqualos: Now, having wasted a few hours and about a gigabyte of network traffic, I restarted the download once again, this time from the browser. And I can only pray and hope that I don't loose my wi-fi connection during the download.

Try to use a download manager. If you're using Firefox, get a free one from their app site, like DownThemAll. I use it, zero problems. I haven't had any problems with GOG downloader up to now, but you know...
Edit: Forget what I said. I got a sample download going, just to see if it's comfortable with a few disabled connections. The first was OK, but the second got a error 403. It still works with smaller files, but bigger may be problematic. Eh, can't win them all.

That's exactly what I meant. If it supported download managers, then Firefox would do just fine even without it - it has the ability to resume interrupted downloads. But the thing is, GOG just doesn't support that. Okay, I understand that it is probably related to access rights, so only logged-in users can download the game, but as a software developer I see a lot of workarounds. For example, put a session number into download URL which is valid as long as the user is logged in. This would even allow a user to use stand-alone download managers. And this is way more simpler than making a special application, or should I say, inventing the wheel?
Hi guys, I know this is off-topic, but I would the GOG crew to take a look at this thread and this seems the only way to reach them...
Thanks in advance!

Gremmi: Sadly it seems that I won't be using the downloader - I've been playing about with it for the past few days, and currently I only have one game queued, yet the downloader process is taking up nearly 1.5GB of system RAM and 25% of CPU time, and still giving me a slower download speed than I would get through the browser. This is on a quad-core CPU, and is pretty much unacceptable. I can appreciate it's in beta but for me at the current moment it's absolutely not worth it.

I used the downloader for the first time to queue up a bunch of stuff I already own to put on my new laptop (4GB Alienware MX15) I get an out of memory error while running this.
It will download for a while, but the RAM usage just keeps increasing until it runs out. Then it crashes, I restart it (a couple times) and it picks up again. Finally got it all completed, but it took about 6 restarts to do so.
I likely won't use it again, it was just easy to queue up my entire library at once

taczillabr: I third this. I don't use the downloader just because of the Air requirement.
Same.
I can't download the downloader. The maintenance page keeps popping up instead...My last post didn't appear?!?

So again: I can't download the downloader. The maintenance page keeps popping up instead...

I'm assuming this is just something with the site rebuild/relaunch...
I no longer seem to have the option to queue games up for the downloader, and the downloader can't connect to the GOG servers. Has the downloader been discontinued? The Downloader appears to be unavailable post-relaunch. My Account page won't let me queue things up for it, and if I run it directly, it can't connect to GOG servers.
Intentional, or just part of the recent transition/rewrite/relaunch?
(Also, I wrote essentially this same message before, and it disappeared into the ether. Only mentioned in case it means that the forums are having glitches as well, or in case it comes back out of a batch buffer somewhere and I end up with two back-to-back posts -- I'd hate people to think I was merely astoundingly impatient... Well, OK, I am impatient, but I'd still hate for people to think of me that way.)(On the off chance my previous posts do show up -- yep, I was just too impatient. All appears to be well now :) )

Looks like it is being updated. the 'add to queue' option is back but it still does not show up in the downloader.
Also clicking on the 'What's GOG.com Downloader?' box once added to queue doesn't do anything now.

Same here. A lack of a decent download/launch client is actually hindering me to buy anything at all on gog.

Good to see that you're updating the downloader, but at the moment I'm not getting any update notifications. :-(

I'm also wondering where are all the promised enhancements (e.g. downloading avatars, soundtracks and all additional extras to the games)?

Um... that was posted long ago (july 2009). The downloader has been dysfunctional since the 4-day PR stunt, and the links to it gone since a couple days later.

They are, however, working on a new downloader, but there's no sign of when it will show up.
Sorry for noob question, but where can I find he downlaoder link? :\

1. Click the game box
2. Click the question mark (The "add to..." link works as well if the "Skip this screen..." box isn't checked)
3. Grab the Downloader

Having an issue where the downloader refuses to log me in with my correct username and password. I even changed the password and attempted to login with both new and old. Both passwords logged me into the website successfully.

I have the same problem... Website login works but downloader refuses.
