So who here is playing this addictive free to play game? It's honestly even cut into my gog games time. The style of play is so different from most other games; like a love child of so many great ideas from other games and designs. Sadly I was never able to get the other tribes games, I remember seeing them on the shelves and thinking "oh man, that looks awesome". I recently really got into it and figured I would spread the love of this game with fellow lovers, and get an idea of how they feel about this game compared to it's past or even different games.

I've only played it briefly, but it does seem like a lot of fun. Nice to see a fast-paced multiplayer FPS for once. My only concern is the amount of XP needed to buy things compared to the amount you from matches, but I'm mostly fine with never buying things tbh.
Certainly the kind of games in which you have no chance to win or to last a decent amount of time unless you're a PGM r0x0r an spend your days on it.

But it is a dynamic game and seems nice to play
Yeah I feel like it's a lot of XP, but I feel it kind of makes it feel more rewarding that way. By the time you unlock something for your favorite class, you are probably very comfortable with how you play and have a good idea on what new things you can achieve from new items that you otherwise wouldn't know yet.
It's awesome, especially the CTF mode!

Compared to T2 (available for free at tribesnext.com), I appreciate the shorter spawn-to-action time and the health regen, but would like more variation in maps and vehicles. We're still missing an indoor-heavy map and a large map, as well as the bomber and heavy transport to go with it. But I'm sure those things are coming. Hi-Rez seems to want to keep developing the game for its entire lifetime.
I've played a few matches,I like the skiing/jetpacking. I'm terrible at it though.

Since it's a team game, you really shouldn't feel like you're competing for points. You need to be helpful to your team, and that's what should feel rewarding. Being at the top of the scoreboard doesn't matter in CTF, since the points system doesn't (at present) measure one's contribution to the team very well.

Practice some roles you feel comfortable with and try to pick one that your team seems to lack. Flag defense and flag stand harassment are pretty easy to get started with, even if you tend to die alot on offense. Generator play is also quite easy, but all too often there are way too many people doing it. A team with 6 guys attacking and/or defending the gen is sure to lose at flag play. One of the greatest strengths of Tribes games is that you have so many roles to choose from.
Played it for a bit, but don't like the microtransaction system so I stopped. Fun game other than that.

I definitely agree! I've also just recently found out about tribes next, and have been playing that a little bit too. But yeah Hi-Rez really seems to be going in the right direction and keeping the game fresh and updated with out destroying the core values! I'm excited for the future of this game as it has seemingly sucked me in and become a permanent game in my usual rotation.

Yes the skiing is so amazing, and I like how they made a dedicated skiing system instead of jumping wildly. You will get better as I have too :D

I respect that, but for me ... lol ... I felt supportive so I've already sunk a bit of money into it.

My brother plays this game a lot. He doesn't mind the microtransactions - the base game is free after all?

Exactly!

Free mode gets you 3 classes, the rest (6) unlock with at most 18,000 exp. Each class also have primary and secondary weapons and each one you get starts with 1 of each, but has atleast one other you can get. They cost 42,000 exp on the cheap side, 100,000 at the most. Also there are different packs for some classes (42,000) and then perks (forget, think 18,000 each, though I believe they unlock for all classes).

I typically got around 500 experience per game. If you buy something you get VIP which gives you some extra EXP and there are boosters.

Yeah, I am aware of the model. It's a bit like LoL in which you actually need an insane amount of exp to unlock everything.
I personally don't mind though. The game is free. The developers need to make money somehow. This is an AAA title, if you like it, why don't you spend $20-30 on it?

Of course developers deserve to be paid. I never said otherwise, I was merely pointing out how the system worked as you seemed interested,
Though I personally would prefer a $20-$30 fee to unlock everything or cosmetic items over what could be game changing items.
Do microtransactions affect the gameplay a lot? Or are they merely cosmetic additions?
