Just continuing with the Norton dislike. Personally I consider Norton Anti-virus to itself be a virus. It messes up your system. It asks for your money, and it's generally harder to remove once on your system than your average virus. I've had several computers left unbootable or without the ability to use it's network interface after running the Norton uninstaller.
That said, if you don't want to ditch Norton, it's possible to right click it's icon and disable the AV-protection for 10-15 minutes, that should work.
At work I've made a loginscript users can download and install to their laptops to add and authenticate against shared printers and drives. The .hta script wrapped in a standard InnoSetup installer to easily add a start menu shortcut and uninstaller. Norton tends to eat it if people try to download it. Disabling it for a 5-minute stretch fixes the problem about half the time. The other half of the time Norton will say it's disabled but still be enabled.
