Not quite sure how this will run on my
AMD 2400+ (2.6ghz) SSE CPU
with 1 Gig Ram
and
nVidia GeoForce 7300 GT 512 MB

And the only place I know that I can try before I buy is EB Games and they no longer stock it here in NZ.

Do you all know of any demos out there or sites that have a good return policy? I was planning on Steam because they are good at keeping things updated but not sure what kind of run around I'd get if it doesn't run on my system.

Check there.

Also, I don't know the actual return policy of Amazon (and specifically the Amazon that ships to New Zealand), but they have been good to me on returns before (the one or two times I have actually returned something).

It will run... but I'm not sure how well it will run.

You might be disappointed.

That RAM amount is gonna make it run hella slow.......and even worse on Any OS after XP.

Fortunately I've still got XP.
It's going to look like arse that's for sure. It uses Shader Model 2.0 by default so it will run on low settings but I think Ram even on XP is going to be a problem. Expect low draw in distances and that means pop-up city.
Fallout 3 is a demanding game. It runs like garbage on my laptop. My laptop has a Intel Core 2 Duo 2.5 GHz processor, 2 gigs of ram and a 8600m GT 512 memory video card.
no matter what you wont be happy, Fallout 3 is just as much of a console game as Oblivion was so even if you could get the GFX running fully the crappy PC controls will ruin every ounce of fun there is to be had.

unless you get a Xbox 360 controller, then it will play fine except for the UI that was designed to be viewed on a 40 inch HDTV from across the room.

Purely your opinion. I had plenty of fun with Fallout 3 with mouse and Keyboard. Nothing that detracted from my experience of the game.

^^ That. Fallout 3, Oblivion and New Vegas control much better with mouse and keyboard. Just because you have the option of using a controller it doesn't mean you have to.
I don't really like Fallout 3 but the Pitt DLC for it is amazing.

I really, really liked Point Lookout myself. It offered something different to the DC Wasteland.
The video card should be fine, I got mine as a gift, and was playing it for a while with a GeForce 6100 IGP. It was definitely playable, but I had to turn the quality settings way down and run it in a window.

I did ultimately give up on that after a while and upgrade to a GeForce 9400 GT, which did a much better job, but even with the underspecced card it was playable.

Getting a mod for the UI in the game is REALLY easy. Makes it much easier on the eyes.
