Fred_DM: the repercussions should be limited to the decision makers
Would be a better world if things worked like this. Unfortunately that's not how it works. Even so, I'm not that sad. I mean, yeah, people will be loosing their jobs, but their downfall would leave a place to be filled and someone will do it. New studios would open, new people or even some of the same, will get hired to work for those studios. I find it easier to think about it in terms of "nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed". I can only hope that the decision makers would have a harder time getting into other decision making jobs.

if THQ closes for good, where do 'their' developer studios go? Relic would have to look for a new publisher. they have a choice between the DLC-money-grabbers at 2K Games, the DRM-yoyos at UbiSoft, the Online-Pass-aficionados and Origin-pushers at EA, etc. each of them would be worse than THQ.

needless to say, their new publisher would likely want Relic to focus more on consoles. Dawn of War 3, or - God forbid - Company of Heroes 2, might become multiplatform games geared towards the xbox... now that's a scary thought.

From those choices I'd say EA or Ubisoft. Simply because GOG has a deal with them :D
If EA buys THQ or Square/Enix buys THQ, it's a good news! ;P

We Will get THQ games on gog ;p

I'd be willing to bet a massive amount of money that neither of them will. It'll either be a smaller company that gets funding to acquire them as part of growth efforts, or a wealthy individual with a tech background looking to get into the gaming industry. I believe the latter is more likely.
I hope relic goes to ubisoft. As Ubisoft is one of the last AAA Publishers that still focuses on pure PC titles. So that we don't see any "croos platform" shenanigans of CoH or DoW. Considering that both titles will have a strong focus on MP an always online DRM is not that bad (and I think Ubi did away with always online anyway).
I hope to heck that ubisoft does not touch these studios as i love relic and vloition but i will not buy any game that comes from ubi(drm)soft.

eeps just realised that my rep is at 666 must have something to do with mentioning the evils of ubisoft :)

oh dear God no! UbiSoft published RUSE, true enough, but Eugen Systems left UbiSoft, and i'm very glad that they did. remember when UbiSoft bought Massive, developers of the superb World in Conflict? they were never heard from again...

I've never gotten the Ubi hate that seems to be so en vogue nowadays. They did a truly maginificent job on Anno (well, bluebyte/related design actually did, but you get my drift). Same goes for the newest Settlers entry.

And I don't really get this "bad Ubi drm" talk. Well, they were a bit two early with their "always online DRM" (and so was Steam with their "online activation" 10 years ago). But that is neither required anymore and not an issue for me, as I'm always online anyway. And the "limited activations" seem to be developer based, as it's not for all games and in case of Anno they simply redirected all requests at bluebyte.

Now I just hope that they take their Uplay in the direction of Steam/Origin/Gog in that they act as an online library for my games.
Ubisoft pure pc gaming?

Aha, that's why they cancelled I am alive and Ghost Recon on PC.
I'm always online anyway.
Funny. Im wireless, and when I lost my connection for five minutes I had to wait for reconnect in Prince of Persia. Never happened with any other DRM in the world.

I'm quite sure they said that they didn't cancel Ghost Recon on PC.

Even if not, PC ver. will be console port.

yeah, but most of their other games are either straight console ports, or heavily dumbed down. they basically ruined the entire Tom Clancy franchise.

AFAIK they have not officially abandoned their always-online policy. there's no telling if the next game will require a persistent connection or not.

anyway, i've had enough internet outages to realize that singleplayer games requiring a constant internet connection are not feasible. i gain nothing from it. i only risk not being able to play when 1) UbiSoft servers are down or 2) my ISP is having issues. both cases are out of my control. just now my internet connection was basically unusable for a good 5 days.

i don't understand why you put GoG in the same category as Steam and Origin. GoG.com is not required in anyway to play the games you've purchased on there. you can buy games on GoG.com, back them up and never come back. install and play anytime anywhere whether GoG.com still exists or not.

So, a shooter being a console port is something new since when ... ?

I can't think of any shooter not beeing "consolified" in recent years (and yes, it sucks). People tend to have double standards when it comes to big publishers, ubi in peticular.
Pure Pc games are console ports since when... ?
