What animals we actually eat are obviously subject to cultural differences.
However, what is considered cruelty to animals is free of most such differences. The extent of which animal cruelty is punishable by law is the only variable.

Weclock: this is the only place where I've gotten any backlash.

Navagon: Probably because trolling is uncommon here. Especially from the higher repped regulars. People don't see it for what it is right away.
I'm not just trolling though, like, I said that I don't understand why everyone gives a damn about some stupid cat, and I'm getting down repped for asking an honest question.
seriously, and these are the same people down repping me who say "rep is bullshit."
and then I get attacked saying "You're extremely unintelligent." excuse me, have you got any evidence? I ask a question and tell my personal opinion on how I don't like animals, and you hate me because I don't like animals? I don't abuse them, and I said outright that I don't think abusing them is necessary.
I mean, you guys are raging waaay too hard
At least animals can try to run away. No one ever complains about the billions of fruits and vegetables that are ruthlessly slaughtered every year.

People care about different things. It's newsworthy because most people (at least in the west) care about animals. Therefore news agencies cater for their interests.
I really don't see why that's so hard to understand.

You don't think abusing them is necessary? Necessary?
So you wouldn't say that it's cruel, wicked, evil, and damnit-there-should-be-laws-against-that-kind-of-thing? Just that it isn't necessary?
Either you're a cruel person yourself who just can't give a fuck because your head is stuck so far up your arse you're choking on your own ballsacks, or you're just too unintelligent to choose your words properly so as to get your message across.
Either way, you come out as the losing party. You deserve being attacked for these kinds of asinine bullshit posts. Even if I'd agree with you and the topic wasn't such an obvious drama bait it's still such a fucking waste of database space it's unbelievable. If you're bored, jerk off or something more useful than posting random news stories that piss you off on these otherwise quite healthy boards. Furthermore, you refuse to explain your position, citing "personal reasons" for why you "fucking hate animals". Not being quite as much of a dumbfuck as yourself, I'm not buying that kind of garbage.
Words should be sharp, because they are the expression of thought, directed at the thoughtless.

stonebro: how is it cruel to say that I think abusing an animal is unnecessary if you don't want to have the animal around?
It doesn't matter why I hate animals, all that matters is that I do.
I deserve to be attacked, because of what.. it's not like I was attacking you, besides stonebro, you're always trollin'.

I can't help myself but thinking this thread was meant to be provocation. Therefore I pass

michaelleung: I'm probably the only one here who agrees with Weclock. I like animals, and I think that they should definitely be treated humanely, and that people shouldn't treat animals like they did to this cat, but all this stuff about treating animals as humans (like... we let them vote?) and PETA saying we should drink beer instead of milk, and that meat is murder and your mom kills animals because she wears fur coats is utter insanity. The whole culture where it's like "I'm going to hunt this fucker down because he mauled a cat" is crazy. Have you thought about "I'm going to hunt this fucker down because he raped his daughter and fathered his grandchildren in a basement"? No. You'd probably feel sickened about it, but you wouldn't be so vocal about it. But change "raped daughter" to "tortured cat" and the whole world goes nuts about animal cruelty and all that.
I sometimes eat dog meat when I'm in China because it's illegal in Hong Kong. The media goes all apeshit about this, going "How could you eat that puppy?" and all that. Well, I'm not eating a puppy and even if I was eating a polar bear I stoned to death, it wouldn't be any of your fucking business. People. They're just little furry things. They're no different to grinding baby chicks alive, but yet most of you still eat chicken and you don't feel disgusted about whatever happened at the processing factory.
Anyway. That probably didn't make much sense, but I really don't care.

Not everyone is a hypocrite. You're speaking to a crowd that might not even be present here. So is everyone else bringing up this point.
EDIT: Jesus Christ, that video may be the most horrible thing I've ever seen. anjohl already covered this below, but the intention present is the most important thing to consider. Knowing about where your food comes from is a topic that everyone should be concerned with.

That chick video is absolutley disgusting. Just look at the video in terms of THEMES, as opposed to just the circumstances, and it *should* horrify you.
I will never buy another commercially produced egg unless I am sure the farm isn't taking part in acts like these.
The real sad thing is that this video is being made as a critique of meat-eating (which is completely non-sensical, since ALL humans are meant to eat meat, since we have Canines), when it's really a critique of capitalism, and the human nature that allows this to happen.
Slaughtering an animal for food use is one thing, but INTENTIONALLY and savagely killing 1/2 of a population just because it's not "efficient" to make money off them? That's absolutely degrading. Those workers should be ashamed of themselves.

Some people do. :)

Regardless, it's just a stupid animal, I'd rather see them hunting after rapists in the press, than hunting after some guy who kicked a cat.
Both are awful acts of violence that should not be happening, and both deserve news coverage.
Is this the "see how much rep you can lose with one thread" game?

Zeewolf: No, you're wrong (and so is PETA, of course). You're saying that all animals are equal - but they aren't. Dogs aren't equal to chicken. They are much more intelligent, and capable of much more advanced emotions. Even emotions that we consider human in their nature.

Probably, but you could say that about dolphins. But emotions are something we usually take into account when we choose what to eat for dinner.

Weclock: I didn't realize the GOG forums were shared by the PETA files website.

We need a PETP to counter the PETA bullshit. People for The Ethical Treatment of People. Those PETA people scare me, it's like they worship animals and make love to them or whatever. It's just wrong. And their ads offend me.

I like it when their ads feature naked women. :P
On a more serious note, there are already dozens of 'PETP'; they're called human rights organizations. Y'know, Amnesty International, for example...
