A lot of those old games are great, but as I was playing Fallout 2 I realized how some aspect of games have improved a lot (besides the obvious like graphics and such which are just a sign of better technology)
For example:
- Interface improvements
- When you are in one widow you can't switch to another one without exiting (If you are in character window hitting "I" won't take you to the inventory)
- They put a huge text for something (like exit) but you have to click on a little button to exit, clicking on the text does nothing.
-- The save games won't sort by time of save,
-- of course the quest/journal is much more sophisticated now and often logs the actual dialog of when you got the quest (this is useful when you come back to a game a few weeks later)
Anything else you guys noticed beside technical progress?
Most current games can be saved at any point in time instead of having specific save points. This actually has taken the difficulty out of games to some extent, but is also convenient. It sucks if something comes up and you have to leave, meaning you lose progress that you made if you haven't hit a save point recently.
Another thing I notice about older games, you have to run a seperate application to change sound and video settings where in modern games that can all be done in game.
I think for me the biggest one would have to be autosave.
And on the subject of saving, savegame thumbnails were also a great innovation.
Better contextual interfaces.
The use of the mouse-wheel (And Key-Mapping in general).
No limitation on 'Save Slots'!
Smooth Scrolling, a lot of old games feel rather jerky (due to the available technology mostly).
I like the Fallout UI layout though, it has that old-clunky mechanical/early-electronics feel to it. Some things could be better, but it works well enough.
