Thief: Deadly Shadows was already "consolized" when it was released in 2004, then for the XBox. 'Twas largely a mediocre product stacked up against its Looking Glass Studios predecessors (Shalebridge Cradle excepted, of course). The "fog" borders for loading zones really broke immersion. It had a lot of other problems (If Garret can't swim or use rope arrows maybe you shouldn't use the Unreal Engine, eh?); too much loot overflow, tedious interludes in a static "City" between levels, and dialog between "Pagans" that would make Jar-Jar Brinks proud. The End Boss was pathetic and cliched compared to the charismatic Constantine or false prophet Karras. Occasionally a little of the old magic turned up in little moments during levels, and some of the graphical effects were nice (though I really missed the beautiful sketched black-and-white art in the briefing videos--those were gorgeous).
I guess there's always hope that Thief 4 will be better, though I'm predicting it will be mostly a continuation of trends from the third game. If we're lucky maybe polished a bit. Different developer, though I'm not sure if Eidos-Montreal will be a move up from Ion Storm.
