It would be one of the greatest games ever. This game would make Zombie Apocalypse games look like games for kids. Imagine, you join a server with 50 people trapped in a remote cold place far away from civilization and one of the players is The Thing... All he has to do to infect someone is bite someone or scratch someone once... Imagine, the game only lets you chat with others near you so you can't warn others. Do you think the average gamer would have a hard time surviving? I think so. The game would be very hard because The Thing can look and act like a normal human being(the person infected) then all of a sudden transform into a giant monster that can bite your head off in 1 second. You never know who is one of them. And if you choose to be alone, you are more vulnerable but if you choose to be in a group, you are even more vulnerable... In the game, everyone is either, a scientist or a skilled worker. Nobody is an elite special forces soldier or gangster or anything like that. There are also no real weapons available so in order to survive, one has to rely mostly on their brain(and luck). If you manage to find an axe or a baseball bat then you are lucky. And those weapons will only buy you time, not hurt The Thing. And if you manage to find a flame thrower, then you are the luckiest player in the game because that is the only weapon that can kill The Thing. Hiding outside somewhere is not an option too because outside, it is so cold, your character will freeze to death after some time.

No one was able to mod that in? I wish that one would come to GOG too. One of the titles I missed. :P
Sounds a lot like The Ship. It puts a bunch of players on a ship (derp), and each one is supposed to kill one of the other players. But you don't know who at the beginning, and killing anyone else gives you a penalty. You also have to do it out of sight of security cameras or NPCs, because you might be put in jail and/or be fined. All the while, somebody else is hunting you. Apart from all this, you also have to search for weapons, sleep, eat, drink, go to the toilet, shower, and even entertain your character in different ways.

You mean The Thing single player game from a long time ago that lets you play as this U.S. Army Special Forces soldier sent to where the movie's story took place to find out what happened?

Which one would play the dog, though?

I don''t think having the The Thing start out in a dog is a good idea for the game because it would give too much of an advantage to those of us who have watched the movie... Someone would just use a flamethrower to kill all the dogs and then game over. The Thing is dead and everyone survives...except the poor innocent digital dogs.

I love The Thing, awesome atmosphere but maybe tough for a game to capture properly. Paranoia is perhaps an under-explored theme in video games, but its one that fits. Multiplayer would be even harder to pull off the atmosphere effectively. You would need to give some pretty good incentive for players to "follow the rules".

I actually bought the pc game earlier this year and was enjoying it until I realized that it was the second game I've ever played that made me sick to my stomach for some unknown reason (weird field of view or something I'm guessing). If I can ever fix the problem I'd get back to it.

Yeah. It would be nice to play a game that makes it so the more paranoid you are, the longer you will survive... I can only think of 2 games that make it so you have to be paranoid to not die every 2 seconds. The Ship and Bloody Good Time.

Good game. I'd like to see GOG sell this too.

When the 2011 movie came out, I think there was something kinda like that. I think it was built into some other game thing or something. When I picked up the DVD, it came with a redeem code for a flamethrower.

I liked the 2003 game too, even if the trust and blood testing mechanics were completely broken.
I don't think it would sell. As cool as it sounds it needs invested players. Most games trying to do something original don't have big enough player-base. I could see something like that in some indie game or something but I think Assasins Creed is the closest to the notion of acting as the way that makes you unnoticeable to others.
I know it's not the same but I used to play "Zombie Panic" and it was quite fun. Maybe because I got to a server where almost everyone was friendly and funny to boot, so it was like playing with friends not strangers, a rare occurrence indeed. At the start of the game for those who don't know it, one person starts as a white zombie and the rest as survivors. Everyone would taunt the zombie with: "...here, whitey...whitey, here...whitey whitey whitey..." to get him angry and be an easy target. Most of the time you'd just hear everyone laughing, while running away from zombies, or fighting them.
The survivors need to barricade themselves and survive long enough, but it's not as easy as it sounds because every time a zombie gets a survivor, that survivor respawns as a zombie which can infect other survivors as well and so it starts to be exponentially more difficult.

iippo: has anyone played The Ship?
No but I have played Bloody Good Time and that is like The Ship.
I had a free code for The Ship a year ago and couldn't give it away. Eventually someone begrudgingly took it. XD

On topic, this idea intrigues me beyond description but I'm glad I wouldn't be one of the programmers. I'm not so sure about using an actual player to be the Thing though I admittedly have next to no experience with MP gaming. It seems people would fight over the opportunity to be "it" and then turn around and complain when they were "it". Also, and this only matters to big time fans of the movies, any human playing the Thing would kill a lot of what made the creature so scary: it's relentless drive to survive with no emotion or conscience. Try as they might a human player is going to let those aspects leak out and ultimately ulterior motives and motivations that the original monster never had are going to show up. A human playing the creature is going to take sides however subtle and opt for some targets over others never being truly (for lack of a better term) "color blind".

Have I put too much thought into this? :P
