Oh yeah, I thought that was a fun one as well. Definitely a little rough around the edges, but I felt I more than got my money's worth.
I'll have to add Risen to my list as well. I really enjoyed that one and before I bought it, most reviews I read were poor to mediocre.

I'm a SaGa fan, but I don't consider them to be bad games at all.
Well, Romancing Saga 1 and SaGa Frontier are super super unfinished, and I guess to an extent Romancing SaGa 3 but the unfinished parts are a lot less noticeable.
Oh wait, I really enjoyed Earthworm Jim: Menace 2 the Galaxy and completed it 100%. That game was pretty bad and didn't have the weird humor the series was known for. When I started playing Mutant Mudds recently all the token collecting reminded me of Menace 2 the Galaxy. >_>

IAmSinistar: I love the Amiga games Eye of Horus and Blade Warrior, both of which were pretty much critically panned.
This Blade Warrior: http://hol.abime.net/138/review Its scores are good!

HGiles: A multi-player shooter of some kind, back in the late 90s. I forget the name. It was just a short free-ware game where a minotaur and a blond guy (and one other character maybe) shot at each other in a side-view stone dungeon. Me and my friends could spend hours killing each other in that thing. It was a PC game, we had to sit side-by-side and share the keyboard.
F4LL0UT: Minotaur and blond guy, side view, stone dungeon - sounds like Hunter Hunted. It wasn't free, though. And there was both cooperative and competitive multiplayer as well as a single player campaign and other areas too, aside from a stone dungeon. Sounds almost like you've only played the demo or something. Amazing game, btw. It was a lot of fun, wasn't it? Now I'm feeling the urge to go hunt it down and challenge people to matches again. :D

* The exception being Amiga Power, my favorite Amiga magazine. They stood up for games that other mags didn't appreciate, such as Exile, and fearlessly panned others. Naturally I also disagreed with them on some of their reviews (re: Eye of Horus), and with them being British, footie games/management sims were always ranked higher than anyone in their right mind would do. ;)

HGiles: That name sounds very familiar. It probably was the demo, because there was definitely only one area. My memories of it are all tied up with my memories of Lords of the Realm, so I think we probably got the demo for free with LotR.
Makes sense since both games were published by Sierra. And yeah, it was indeed an amazing game, sadly barely anyone knows it and it also had a mediocre reception when it was released. I've beaten the whole single player campaign, beaten all cooperative missions with a friend (I think SP + Coop is like 200 missions in total) and we've also smashed in our faces a zillion times in deathmatch - it was like friggin' 2D Unreal! I tried installing it recently but sadly the old Sierra installers don't work on Windows 7. Will have to try some stuff to get it working. I'm SO hoping that we'll get a GOG release of the game eventually.
Interesting. I grew up with the German magazine Amiga Joker (later followed by PC Joker) and IIRC most of their scores were pretty darn low, I remember barely a single game that got a 90+ score - maybe Battle Isle was among them. Also many true classics everyone remembers now got low ratings there. Yeah, German games journalism wasn't EVER good. <.<

If I recall, Amiga Joker followed in Amiga Power's wake, once the "we never give games bad ratings" ice was well and truly broken. But not having read German gaming mags, I could be easily mistaken. There are also a good deal of cultural differences at work, and it may be that German (and British) reviewers were more inclined towards honesty and candor. Many American game review magazines of the time seemed eager to fellate the publishers. At least, such are my memories in this regards, though they could be coloured by the fact that I often didn't care for the big-name releases many were drooling over, and loved the independent games some reviewers didn't seem to bother examining properly because the publisher wasn't a major player.

Man, if Hunter Hunted is a bad game I don't want to play good games! I still say "begin mission" when starting something important today !
So fun! Local Co-op is the way to play games (online is for weak!)

I don't think I absolutely [i]loved[/]i any games that got panned, in a "my favorite game ever" way, but some that I've enjoyed...
Silent Hill 4--It tried new things, and largely fell on its face, but I had a good time with this game. I liked the story (although not the storytelling info-dump).
Dragon Age 2--I admit to most of the problems people have with this game, but I like the characters, and I like a fantasy story that isn't "Save the world."
Two Worlds--Almost everything about this game was bad, but I'd just wander around the world, exploring for hours. Good times.
Rule of Rose is bad bad bad but I love horror games and I managed to find something to enjoy in it anyway.

Daedalus1138: (2) I haven't played the game in probably five or six years. Still, I loved that game to death when I was younger.
grviper: Oh, you'd love it now. The firing rate of machine guns seems to depend on the frame rate. It's like a death cloud generator on the modern hardware. Sadly, it goes through ammo extra fast. grviper

Unfortunately, the game isn't working. I just installed it, started it up... and it crashed my computer. Twice. Looks like I'll have to miss out.
