Seattle cartoonist proposes "Everyone Draw Mohammad Day"
Ok, for those not following event, South Park, in their 200th episode, dealt with a subplot involving Mohammad. Despite the fact that he had been shown in a much older episode in 2001, prior to the 9/11 attacks, it's been something that rarely anyone has tackled, due to the last issue that happened with the Danish newspaper cartoons. Mohammad was forbidden to be seen, and eventually was put inside a bear suit to be given to Tom Cruise (He was in a bear suit since he could not be seen). This caused a website called Revolution Muslim to essentially say that Matt Stone and Trey Parker, creators of South Park, could be killed.
In the next episode, 201, Comedy Central, according to South Park Studios, edited the episode before broadcasting, censoring EVERY time the name Mohammad was uttered. They also censored the ending speech by Kyle and Santa (Who was actually in the bear suit, see my avatar). Mohammad was censored, but it seemed to be intentionally done given what happens to Tom Cruise when he inherits his "power" not to be mocked.
Now, the effect of Comedy Central bowing to threats by extremists seems to have started quite a bit of an uproar. People don't understand why it's ok to mock every religion except one. Others think that by giving into their threats, they have essentially allowed them to get their way, which will lead to future extremists being able to get what they want. Surprisingly, almost every article I have read has been against the censorship, and all for equal-opportunity mockery. I've even read accounts of Muslims who are extremely upset to be lumped together with extremists, and feel that their threats are bringing unfair bias against their faith.
Now, a Seattle cartoonist proposes the extreme: EVERYONE drawing a picture of the prophet of Mohammad and posting it online. I assume this is done in an attempt to do exactly what these extremists don't want. But keep in mind: The Internet, she is a harsh mistress. I can only IMAGINE the pictures that are going to come out of this, especially from places like SA or 4chan.
Does anyone have any strong opinions, either for or against this, the censorship, the episode in question, etc? I figure this community is probably the only mature community capable of speaking about this maturely, so I'd like to get some opinions on it. I personally oppose censorship, and which the episode was uncensored, even Mohammad, especially since he was already shown uncensored 9 years ago. I also think that the proposed holiday on Facebook might have some unexpected results that might be either positive or negative, given the nature and anonymity of the internet.
Thoughts?

while i really hate religious extremists who go as far as thinking they have to divine right to kill people, i can't see how just pissing them off is going to do anything productive-other than to exercise free speech.
I have an idea for a day. Its called "lets see how many people we can piss off day". Seriously, this idea is pretty much the asshole way to solve a problem.
I think it's awesome. Dangerous fundies can go fuck themselves. Give them too many targets and too spread out to do anything about.
Have you seen this man?

They'll just bomb the nearest target to their location. Bali bombing, anyone?
Moreover, doing this will not only pissing the fundies, but also the moderates (which may shift their viewpoint toward a more extreme one). In this case, exercising your freedom of speech is totally counterproductive with the goal of eradicating religious extremism.

Even so, we can't accept a situation where any Islam-bashing is censored because of "I KEEL U"-type threats.
To allow a minority to control a majority through fear will only reinforce that behaviour. People have no right not to feel insulted, of course while this may bring up problems, none of them will be as bad as the problem of a continual sense of entitlement and religious zealousness held by these few.
To be fair though, this should be targeted at religion in general, to focus just on Islam may harm the movement as people will undoubtedly label it as Islam-bashing.
Anyway, if some really really bad pictures of Mohammed come out it may cause a few fundies to choke on their own indignation.

That post your Mohammed drawing wouldn't work.
In most Islamic countries the internet is highly filtered to keep unwanted content away from people.
They often name porn, but a lot of democratic and human rights content is also filtered.
Such "news" in those countries is often used to focus people's emotions and attention towards foreign people and countries in order to keep the focus away from their own problems.
The more fanatic religious people are, the more intolerant they are.
It's not bound to Islam, followers from other religions are capable of doing the same.

That is already done. Surely you know of that NSFW pic of Muhammed.
South Park is just as much as 'extreme' as those 'threats' - it's a media circus, nothing more. I like South Park because they don't really take themselves seriously. Any kind of religious 'group' that jumps on each cheap shot for the 'right' reasons is just one more drop in the Sea of Human Stupidity.

Actually Jesus is a regular character in South Park and don't even mention the Mormons. What people are arguing about here is equal opportunity lampooning. It's not right that one religion is mocked mercilessly while another is totally taboo.

Generally, I agree. We do need to take a much firmer stance against extremism. Not just politically (especially in the UK) but also on an individual level too. Kowtowing to extremists is only going to encourage them. They're like the playground bullies who never got smacked down by George McFly.
Ideally, this shouldn't impact upon the moderates. After all it's important to keep a dividing line between them and the extremists in ways that Bush & Blair failed to do. But seeing as this is a reaction to extremism it should be extremism that is recognised as the root cause of this reactionary response.
As for moderates turning to extremism over a cartoon - there is no such thing. Just extremists showing their true colours.
Also:
Norris has asked other artists to submit drawings of any religious figure to be posted as part of Citizens Against Citizens Against Humor (CACAH) on May 20th.

Put it this way, is there a religion that hasn't been mocked on South Park? Why should Islam get special treatment. Oh and athiesm has also been mocked when they had the Dawkins two parter.

The group that threatened the South Park creators is based in New York.

Wraith: Santa (Who was actually in the bear suit, see my avatar).

OMG, Santa Claus is a Muslim!!! And Mohamed to boot?! Sorry, I just thought it was in the best tradition of the internet to totally take what you said out of context and reach the totally wrong conclusion.
Seriously though, we are only allowed to make fun of people with enough humility to laugh at themselves. Hasn't political correctness taught you anything?!
