Stevedog13: Now lets apply this to the recent GOG conference. They anounced the conference and said that it was full of goodies for The Witcher 2 and there will be a free "Legendary" RPG given away free as a gift to loyal customers. The boards were awash with what those goodies might be as well as what free title would be given out. Expectations skyrocketed based on rumor and hearsay and this is what caused such levels of disappointment and anger.
Precisely this.
I saw the announcement and at least one thread filled with speculation, and I thought "Neat, there will be some sort of treat on Thursday! I need to make a point of going to GOG to check on it!"
Do I match the description of people who will be getting a treat? Let's see... Do I own The Witcher 2? Check. Loyal customer? Well, I own over a 100 GOG games. I've never even played The Witcher 2, or most of the games I've bought here, but I keep spending money for more games, so I think that qualifies.
So what did I get for being a loyal customer, and for owning The Witcher 2? Well, I'd already purchased both Fallout and The Witcher 2 from GOG, so nothing there. I not going to review a game for a console I don't own, so the free review copies don't do me any good. I would like HoMM V, but I've no interest in Assassin's Creed and $19.99 is a lot for HoMM V, so that's a wish list item for now. Pretty anti-climatic.
Ironically, the treat was for people who *didn't* already own most of the legendary RPGs on GOG and who *didn't* own The Witcher 2 on GOG. And I kinda wish now that I'd purchased a physical copy of The Witcher 2 instead, since that way I'd get all the physical stuff that comes with the game (game manual, game guide, world map, making-of DVD, OST CD, papercraft dolls), plus I'd *still* have gotten to have the DRM-free download from GOG.
Am I furious? No. Calling for a boycott? Of course not. But disappointed? Yes, obviously. That's what you get when you exaggerate what you will be giving your customers -- disappointment and a loss of goodwill. I didn't post yesterday to complain, because that's not my normal inclination, but if people want to understand why some people did complain (and why doubtless a lot more people were at least a little disappointed), then they will have to understand that GOG screwed up expectations beforehand.
