Prator: Hey, since the Space Marines lost the battle for the Deimos Penninsula, does that mean we're out of the campaign altogether? And does killing the warboss in-game have any impact on the story?
avatar
Fenixp: Nope, of course it doesn't mean that. Also, no, it does not - not yet anyway, I'm thinking of implementing assasination rule in every game. But since heroes don't take too much to be killed, it might not be fun... So maybe I'll just stick to typical 'he was just knocked out for a while. Actually, these first games had a little impact on the story itself, I just wanted to get you guys playing.
I generally don't field heroes anyhow; the money it takes to pay for one can usually also pay for other, more useful things. If fielding one meant I could "lose" a battle even if I achieved the victory objectives, I'd be even less inclined to use them.
Well the good news is that I've got my copy of dark crusade back, the bad news is that I suck at RTS' so I probably won't be much of a challenge

Don't worry fenixp makes up for 3 people on his own so if you actually want to sabotage him or something whilst on his team that may even it up a bit :P
Well I don't INTEND sabotage but accidents DO happen... Still not gotten that promised candy.

Prator: ...

Fully upgraded heroes - especially psykers - attached to a squad can do incredible ammounts of damage. That thing that destroyed your dreadnaught in 2 seconds WAS a hero, after all :D
Also: People, it's not me being so good, it's you never actually playing the MOD!
Yeah I just played the standard tutorial with the tau and had no idea what the hell was going on. I still won but hardly though effective tactis, just weight of numbers. Maybe I should play IG...

Fenixp: Well, yeah, but you had a fully upgraded Mek WARBOSS, a hero only available when you're at tech level 3 and in possession of a relic. Of course it's going to be the strongest thing on the field when it's souped up. If, on the other hand, you just throw a Space Marine Captain out onto the field with no boosters, he ain't gonna last.

Go ahead and watch the replay, upgrading the warboss was 3 times his original price. You wouldn't even need to beat him by heroes, he's so slow he can be easily danced - and can't take that much of punishment at all

...I forgot to save the replay. And it took about a minute or two of continuous heavy bolter fire to bring him down from three turrets to bring him down; given how much destruction he wreaked in that time, that's not bad.
2 squads of tactical marines weclock used against him actually drained almost half of his health until he managed to get into meele. Replays are on wave, both of them
You should see how damn quickly my eldar got shredded. Definitely out of date on 40K and this combined with the newness of the mod and the my general shittiness at competitive MP in RTS' made for a bloodbath

Playing the Eldar effectively is tricky anyway, since all of the units are either:
A. Super-specialized, or
B. Made entirely out of fine china (the ceramic kind, not the national kind).
You've really got to make the most of their stealth and specialization capabilities if you don't want to get slaughtered.
Oh yeah, I used to be pretty good with them in tabletop but with this real time business it becomes vastly harder to use them effectively and you basically need to be one of the uber micro types to use them
What would be a lot better is if you could set up AI rules before the match akin to the type of thing you get in Dragon Age so your units could follow your orders without the clunky interface making issuing those orders harder than it should be
I wish they would release some turn based gamesworkshop games other then just blood bowl recently. I bet they could digitize if not their primary games then all there smaller spinoffs that don't sell models anymore. I want to play turn based battlefleet gothic or mordhiem.
Yeah I even came up with a good business model for it in some other thread, you buy a core game consisting of the engine and a 2000 point block for one army of your choice. You buy access to each army by buying a 2000 point block which gives you access to all the "miniatures" and can then buy 500 point blocks to expand for a larger force each time.
If you were like me and wanted to run your regular teams of marines, eldar & chaos armies and then play around with stuff you're curious about like the imperial guard or tau then you'd be spending a bucketload of money which would be mostly profit for GW since it'd basically be a large one time production cost and then rare updates & addons.
It wouldn't really even threaten the tabletop game since half the fun of that is the collecting and painting the miniatures, building scenery and the like. The other half coming almost entirely from being there in person to see the look on your opponents face when your guardsman with a laspistol gets the luckiest roll in history and blows up his land raider with a terminator squad inside...
