My favourite horror story has got to be The Raft by Stephen King from his short story collection Skeleton Crew. Just the thoughts of being stranded on a raft in the middle of a deserted lake, unable to sit down, with no food --- ugh, gives me the heebie jeebies.
My favourite novel would be House on the Borderland by William Hope Hodgson. Or The Rats by James Herbert. Not that well written, but the idea again! You're never more than a few feet away from a rat...

And I haven't read any terror novels, I'm not really sure why I guess it's because I read Sci-Fi stuff and I just never came around to switch to horror novels.
