Wanted to bump an older thread of mine, but the title wasn't properly named, and besides that was so long ago. So here's a new one. Also, presenting v1.08, aka the biggest update ever!

http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/14190-tdm-108-is-finally-here/page__pid__297852#entry297852
It's the third anniversary of The Dark Mod's release today. What better way to celebrate than to present our most significant update ever?

The 1.08 update contains nearly a year's worth of updates and improvements. So many, in fact, that it's hard to remember them all. Some of the improvements, like getting TDM ready to go standalone, are fairly transparent to the user. Others will have a noticable impact on your game.

IMPORTANT: Because of changes to the way TDM is run now, (in preparation for going standalone) the first time you run TDM 1.08, you will need to reset your keybindings and other settings. Additionally, "tdmlauncher.exe" no longer starts TDM. Users will need to change any shortcuts to "darkmod/TheDarkMod.exe", in Windows, and "thedarkmod.x86" for Linux users. As always with an update, saved games from earlier versions will no longer work, so finish any missions you're in the middle of!

Richer audio: TDM 1.08 should provide a much more immersive sound experience. We've added over 200 new impact sounds, as well as two new vocal sets. Many things that used to be silent now make appropriate noises. Falling bodies now make impact sounds, arrows have sound as they whiz past you, and AI make rustling noises as they move based on what they're wearing.

AI Improvements: The lightning-fast reactions of AI have been toned down, so that they don't leap immediately to combat after a half-second glimpse of you down the street. AI now react to things getting thrown at them, and can be knocked out by heavy things being dropped on their head. AI are smarter about using elevators and will use them while searching now. Several new AI character models have been added, including the Builder Acolyte and the Elite Citywatch.

Additionally, the Training Mission has been revamped by Bikerdude for 1.08, with a few new sections and beautiful improvements to the visuals. The team's second demo mission, The Tears of St. Lucia, has also been updated for 1.08 and is now included with the mod by default.

There have also been dozens of new art assets added, an entire series of new light entities, improved flame particles, performance improvements, additional animations, fixes to some physics issues, and well over 100 other bugfixes. You can see a full changelog here: http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=What%27s_new_in_TDM_1.08

To get the update, simply run tdm_update.exe in your darkmod folder. If you've never downloaded TDM before, visit our Download page for full instructions: http://www.thedarkmod.com/download-the-mod/

Thanks to our new coder, Taaaki, who did a great deal of work on this update preparing TDM to run standalone. And special thanks to grayman, without whom the update would never have happened at all.

Hope you enjoy!

For the unacquainted, you will need:
Doom 3 (for now, but the mod is slowly moving towards standalone)
Doom 3 1.3.1 patch

Added on my list of things to play, thanks.
Dark Project is definitely one of the best things I've seen in game modding, ever. So yeah, this is quite awesome, I'm still holding it off 'till I finish the original Thief games.

No man you gotta have Doom 3. I should update the OP to make it clearer. Also yeah the link is broken in my post. Hang on.
Well, this is going stand-alone at some point, so I'll probably wait until then.

I am intrigued, though.
It does look great and I'm eagerly waiting for the standalone version, since I really don't like Doom 3 enough to buy it.

Thanks for bringing it up again.

Oh! Ok. Someday, then. :-)
I didn't really like TDM that much. Compared to Thief 2X (another mod) TDM is vastly inferior. Thief 2x is the best mod I've ever played (along side Black Mesa) and really captured the feel of Thief but TDM didn't. So much work went into TDM and it is worth a playthrough but I just found it tedious to play. The difficulty was just off, with some parts being too easy and others being too hard.
But who knows, maybe I should give it another chance?

Just purely out of curiosity, which parts of it and which missions do you find tedious?

TDM is a mod tool box, not a mod mission.

you install TDM and then download and play fan missions in it, I think that the only "mission" it comes with is the training map and that is just to teach you how to use the mechanics of the mod.

Lowyhon is being nice, I'm not: you full of shit!

Either you haven't played it at all or you put so little effort into trying it out that it was luck that you even got it installed correctly. my guess is on the former and your just fan-boi-ing for Thief 2X without even knowing shit about TDM.

*edit* sry, that was rude ... the general statement still stands because there is no way you could get that far off base about the FMs built with TDM unless you have no idea about how it works, but I shouldn't have gone so troll about it. each mission for TDM is unique because each mission is made by completely different people, saying that the "TDM is boring" is like saying that all UE3 mods are dude-bro shooters.

Another up for TDM here.

An awesome mod that uses the Doom3 engine, but don't let that put you off if you don't like Doom 3 - the Dark Mod is a tribute to Thief, absolutely nothing to do with Doom3 itself.

(Technically, for copyright purposes, its not set in the Thief universe, but to all intents and purposes.....)

I went out and bought a copy of Doom3 just to play the Dark Mod. If you have ANY inclination to play Thief I, II or III, then you should be playing the Dark Mod.

It's been a few years so the details escape me but I do remember the lockpicking mini-game being somewhat weird and I mostly played the Training mission that came with the mod but I did DL a few other missions also but at the time there was only 4-5 missions out IIRC. So it's possible that some later missions now are better designed and hence more fun. Like I said I just prefer mods from Dromed and Thief 1 and 2.
with almost all commercial UE3 games being mod locked to promote DLC no one is modding with Unreal anymore, with Crysis 2 (and 3) being developed with console mechanics in mind no one is modding on that end either (outside of community fixes for things that Crytek half assed in 2), and with Bethshittia's handling of ID post buyout it's obvious that "Tech" modding is a dead end street .... it's really sad to think of how many mod projects of comparable scope there were back when TDM got started, now it's simply inconceivable to put this much work into a mod.
