Old news for those following (this game has been in production for a couple of years now) but I know a lot of you reading this have probably never heard of the game before this thread. XD

I found out about the game through Green Light (See? GL is actually good for something!)
The developers began collecting pre-orders in April. Although I, personally, can't afford the $25 cover charge I figured there might be a good handful of Kickstarter/Baldur's Gate fanatics that might take a shine upon realizing this game exists.

Released in 2013, I'll probably snag a copy during an X-mas sale or something but Betas should be available for people to play up until then.

I've pre-ordered a long time ago. The demo was phenomenal, AoD is shaping out to be the best cRPG since Troika's demise. I found myself playing it over and over for weeks.

Considering that the developers kept telling everyone "We're 90% done!" or similar for years, I'd consider pre-orders without a firm release date to be very premature. The game may end up being great, but at the moment the devs just don't have a whole lot of credibility when it comes to predictions of when it will be released. And given that I wouldn't consider it particularly wise to hand money to them just based on vague promises.

I never liked pre-orders but I never knew about this game until now. I'm going to try the beta asap however as it looks interesting to say the least.

I've considered this with similar projects like Cortex Command and Miner Wars and realized that over the past half decade we're now getting access to a lot more alphas than we did in earlier years but I believe the development time is on par with quite a few projects of past as I've heard some games can sit in production for a good five years. We just never knew about those until about three months before the developers knew they were ready to release them.

I didn't get the impression they were putting it that way. More like they were saying they had the story 90% finished, the game mechanics 90% finished, the animations 90% finished, etc. And that was 90% finished to send through testing phases. I could be mistaken though. I followed the game development only sporadically over the last couple years. Looks like it will be a great old-style RPG with some real different ways of doing quests. I'll likely pick this one up (90% sure, anyway... :P )

But I agree that I don't think I'll hand over any money until the finished product is available.

So, what's so unique about this game? I keep on hearing people talk about how it's unique (especially the combat), but it looks pretty generic to me. Good, admittedly, but not so good as to have all this excitement over it.
