Hello,

Can anyone recommend any text-based RPG/adventure on PC? As I'd like to try this kind of game, I'd like to know what are (if any) the classics of the genre etc. Thanks in advance.

Howdy!

To clarify, are you asking about interactive fiction such as Zork, Enchanter, etc?

Yes, I did not know about Zork actually (just found in on GOG right now). Anything else in the same vein?

The hobbit text adventure:

Thank you! I checked the Zork Anthology and it seems brilliant! However the sequels seems....I don't know, there is not the same appeal with graphics...are the sequels worth getting or shall I only invest into the Zork Anthology?
There's "The Pawn" and "The Guild of Thieves" if you can find them. All these Magnetic Scroll games have a good reputation.

The "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" was fun.

"Hound of Shadow" is supposedly a great Lovecraftian horror game.

And some recent ones i'll look for in a minute...

I'm not sure as i've never played them. Hopefully someone else can let you know.

Thanks a lot Telika, I'll check on the internet if I catch them somewhere. Thanks all for the really quick time of reply and help! That's really appreciated, thank you.
441635,

In addition to the Zork IF games sold here (and I like Zork 0 the best), the 3 Zork graphic adventures are a nice follow up, but I'd play them after you're done with the text games since they reference locations/events/etc in the text adventures.

Until GOG adds the other Infocom games (which many people including myself have been asking for for a while), here are some links for free text adventures:

The Brass Lantern: http://www.brasslantern.org/ (I always mess up links)
Emily Short's site: http://emshort.wordpress.com/ (Writes IF and about IF)
The Interactive Fiction Archive: http://www.ifarchive.org/ (Lots of free games of varying quality)

Enjoy!

My favorites are the MUDs (online versions).

I played medievia ages ago. It's still around.

Thank you very much Jimmer 1 and Tallima, I will check these links right now!

Softporn Adventure. I don't actually recommend it but it is here: http://www.gog.com/gamecard/leisure_suit_larry

EDIT: I do however recommend the Star Trek game from the '70s: http://www.almy.us/sst.html

"Guild of Thieves" was one of my first games. I could never get into that guy's windmill. I even tried seducing him once. It didn't work.
Thanks Darling_Jimmy I will look for Star Trek in a few mins (checking for the other links right now).

tinyE thx, I checked "Guild of Thieves" and it seems great. The title only is already appealing :D

By the way those text-based games remind me in a way to "Choose your own adventure" books (I used to own a bunch as a kid, things I got in second-hand/antique shops). Were there any computer adaptations of those brilliant books? Would be nice to catch one.
