I'm looking for some modern takes on a couple of good old classic games(Tetris and Breakout mostly). Mainly that they be for modern hardware (bells and whistles ahoy) but without changing the gameplay much. Preferably free and DRM-free. Any recommendations?

I've only seen one game that does something different with Tetris, and that was Tetris on the DS system. Aside from the typical game, they included a number of puzzles based on pre-existing blocks, creating shapes, hitting two-three-four rows at a time in order to progress, and a take on the old Yoshi's Cookie.

Anything else, I'd suggest looking through facebook or Popcap games.
You can get and [url=http://www.indievania.com/games/furiod]Furiod for free on Indievania. Graphics are pretty simple (no bells and whistles to speak of), but gameplay stays pretty similar to the originals (though some twists are added in both cases). Check out the gameplay videos on the two pages.

You can also get Wizorb for a dollar. Graphics are again quite retro, gameplay is said to be interesting, though the changes are more substantial.

Not free, but the Ricochet games are quite good. There are a few of them in the series and you can find them for sale several places.

i also recommend Wizorb but if you still want to get it for $1 I think you have to hurry, the sale should end tomorrow or even tonight. Anyway, it's worth getting even at the regular price (which is about 2.99, IIRC).
