I have a lot of original discs, like fallout 1 and 2, system shock 1 and 2 and so on, but I never kept the original boxes- they just take up so much room.

At least I can still play them, even if I have to change discs all the time (see other thread).

Fenixp: And I wouldn't be worried about disappointment, I've been trough all the hype over SS2 myself in ... eh ... 2005 I think and still found SS2 to be a fantastic game. (I actually downloaded version from home of the underdogs, nothing like GoG back then) The game just stands very well on its own, it's crazy immersive and gives you great sence of progression.
And where do you think I got my first copy? :)

Don't get me wrong, I love the game. I just really don't think that after BioShock, people will respond that well to it, similarly to how people who played SS2 weren't usually that enamoured with BioShock.

Anyway, I already tried that SS1 mouselook mod and it's utterly fantastic. I think it might be time for another replay.

You should look up System Shock Portable.....it's a folder contained PORTABLE version of SS1(cd version) with mouselook mod and support for a few higher resolutions included.

I've always been confused about this. Is SS portable the same as SS or is it some kind of fan remake/mod/etc? Is this mouselook mod applicable to it or does it need the original SS?
avatar
lowyhong: Oh sure, it's $550, and probably won't sell, but believe you me, the previous 3 copies I saw on eBay went for $200 - $300 each. I know the game's rare, but damn...
Jeez, that is about as bad as some of the out of print comics I've looked up...

It's a self contained version of the original game(cd version) that one could carry from pc to pc on a flash drive if they wanted....all files are in one folder that are needed to run the game. It comes with mouselook mod(I think) and a few higher resolutions.
Well thanks for all the reply. Ill DL it off torrents or warez once i've finished playing Dungeon Keeper 2. Hopefully the rights issue will be sorted sometime in the future (cross fingers for EA not getting them) and ill be able to get it somewhere legit.

orcishgamer: You mean copyright, most likely. For many abandonware games the actual copyright holder cannot be determined, so while the work doesn't get forfeited to the public domain, there's no one to enforce the copyright.

For other games some copyright holders simply choose to not make those games for sale for whatever reason. They could still enforce their copyright if they wanted, I'm not aware any cases where anyone's won a judgement in such a case. It would be hard to show financial harm if the product wasn't for sale, you'd have to show it lessened he value of an asset you were planning to liquidate or something (as a guess). Regardless if the game falls into this category you can judge for yourself if you're harming anyone by downloading an abandonware copy.
So basically it is a kind-of limbo, then? I mean, it's like the publisher saying "We're not going to use this IP, but neither can anyone else."

This sucks, especially when it comes to SS2. Thanks for taking the time to explain it to me, though.

Torrenting System Shock 2 is not piracy, but rather illegal salvage.

rjspring: ...still kicking myself for not picking up a copy a saw a few years back at babages (now gamestop)...

lowyhong: I got outbid several years ago on Yahoo Auctions Singapore. Game was sold at $25, I bid $25, and some yahoo came in just a few minutes before the auction ended and bid $26. Jeez. I was so sure I could win the game, I didn't bother to check before the last few mins.

GameRager: I've owned two legit copies of SS2, one for around full price when it came out and another for around 10 bucks. Since then i've lost or broken both discs and i'm not about to pay 50 bucks for an eBay copy.....

lowyhong: You can probably sell the boxes on eBay, and they'd still fetch a reasonable price.

System Shock 2, however, is not the current winner of value-inflated eBay games. The honour now belongs to this.

I've still got my big box Fallout, and it's nowhere worth that much. The fact that he's put "very good" as the condition means he won't get any offers. For people to pay that much, it needs to be in immaculate condition and still sealed.

I mean, "very good"? There's a crack on the CD jewel case. The corners of the box are tatty.

Maybe we should make a space opera about illegal game salvagers? We could call it "Space Trackers"......(Space Truckers FTW, btw)

Ah hah! That's where you're wrong!
