Im bored at work (again) i need a few suggestions for games i can play at work which can be easily tabbed out of, dont require much attention and dont make much in the way of noise.

To make it easier we will stick to GOG titles.
Raptor
Tyrian
HoMM series (its turn-based so, you wont lose anything if you tab out)
Alpha Centauri
Rollercoaster Tycoon

Im going to try Tyrian first and see how much i can get away with... then its on to Alpha Centauri.

Tyrian crashes when tabbing to desktop.

Im on an old as shitty xp machine. I might go borrow a better machine from the basement
Solitaire.
I suggest this:

:D
List of Dosbox games:
http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/GOG_games_that_use_DOSBox

You can play them windowed (press Alt+Enter ingame), which seems very helpful in your situation. Personally I wouldn't go for an action game, an adventure, rpg or strategy game may be easier to switch and don't need the sound turned on. So, take a look on Mater of Orion pack or the first Gabriel Knight. Also todays release Lands or Lore looks interesting, it's also use Dosbox and the first is a very newbie-friendly rpg games. I only choosed the cheap one for 6 bucks.

Edit: ScummVM games on gog: Beneath a steel sky (free, highly recommended), the first two Broken Sword games (also highly recommended), Feeble Files, Gobliins pack, Lure of the Temptress (free), and the first two Simon the Sorcerer games. Maybe I miss some.

OpenTTD can easily take up days of your life. Same goes for SimCity 2000. Or if you're cheap, Micropolis.

OpenTTD is abolutely a good advise. You don't need the original game anymore, everything is redone. You can play it in portable mode (no installation needed) and windowed. Great recommendation I absolutely support.

Master of Orion 1 and 2.
I already have Broken Sword's and Sim City on GOG. So might give those a whirl.

Cant play Broken Sword at home the save fix doesnt work on my machine. It should work fine on this shitty xp machine though.

Im going to save things like feeble files for when i can get absorbed in a game, rather then looking over my shoulder. Luckily the guy i sit next to in the office is sound and pisses about too.
You can play them all (Dosbox+scummvm) from an usb-stick, so you don't need to worry about different savefiles. Maulwurd 1977 has a thread about it with some tutorials videos on youtube:

+1 for HoMM
I play it only in windowed mode, which is useful when I do more things at once.
Beneath a steel sky or Master of Orion 2
