I played a VERY old game, Star Command (1988) a long time ago. Here's an LP link, just for reference http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOVOkH0sOdk .

I really don't know much about any space game, as I've never been too into them, save for one or two here and there. I'm wondering if someone could recommend a game that contains certain elements:

*) The ability to upgrade ship and accessories during play.
*) Crew have rank, and may gain rank depending on actions ingame.
*) Rank has bearing ingame, the more the better.
*) If rank doesn't have great value, it has at least some value.

In Star Command, rank only affected how much pay each crewman received each month (mission), and thus how well you could upgrade your stuff. Unfortunately, promotions were randomly given; you could save and reload right before turning in a mission and get totally different promotions.

GOG is reporting on their latest game addition FTL, and looking at it reminded me of that old game. While FTL has a cool view of the interior of your ship and interesting things that can happen inside, the LP I watched was quite boring. Apparently all you do is target enemy weapons every combat, and the game consists of a bunch of random encounters for an hour, with no ability to continue playing after the end. Plus there was no upgrade option for your ship and seemingly random, limited options for addons.

In Star Command you could save up for larger, better ships, and spend money on better engines, weapons, shields, and so forth. Gameplay was limited given when it came out, so I"m wondering if someone might know another game that offers upgradability and rank and promotions for your crew.
I can suggest S.P.A.Z , but the crew management is almost inexistent. Watch a LP, maybe you like it.
