On the 1st of November 2012 Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader will be updated, so if you want to archieve a copy of original game, you may want to do so.

I don't know about details, but I suppose our copies will be replaced just as Beyond Divinity and Divine Divinity not so long ago.
Do you know what is involved in the update? Also, GOG sometimes releases patches as additional downloads rather than updating the installers. Hopefully that case will remain the same here. Thanks for the update.
Support for 2560x1600 resolution, new view of the battle screen (you will be able to see whole map on one screen).

Crusader HD will also get 10k limit of units visible on the screen, additional missions and more.

I suspect that means Crusader will be officially Windows 7 compatible too.
Can you provide a link for your source? This is definitely news to me. I knew Firefly was making a new Stronghold Crusader, but this is the first time I've heard of the first two games getting this kind of update.

It'll be interesting to see what the changes there'll be if any besides supporting widescreen. That alone would be good enough for me though, but I'm not entirely sure if GOG would get the updated editions as they may be handled through a different publishing partner or even self-published by Firefly?

Firefly Studios Announces Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader in HD - we know the release date

Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader, the game known in Poland in titles Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader will see the refreshed editions - studio announced Firefly, on the occasion of revealing details about the HD version.

November 1, 2012, the band will see the game Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader in HD, which edits the original debuted on the market for more than ten years ago. What can we expect from them?

Firefly Studios promises that the Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader in HD will be available to support resolution of 2560 by 1600 pixels, and a new view of the battlefield in HD, thanks to which players will be able to see the entire map on one screen. In addition, the Crusader HD will be what you get in Stronghold Warchest and Stronghold Crusader Extreme, which is a limit of 10 thousand. units on the screen, extra missions, and more.

Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader in HD will be available in digital distribution such as on GoG.com, GetGamers and Amazon.
Knowing GOG, the original versions may remain as an extra bonus. :p
I actually just found a news piece about it here, too.

Sounds good to me. I love those games, so anything to slightly enhance that experience is fine by me. A free update would be nice, but I don't know whether I should expect it.

Beyond Divinity got updated? I thought it was just DD.

Also, cool news about Stronghold, from reading some threads on the WSGF it seems it was almost impossible for modders to find a way to hack a widescreen mod for those games because the resolution was tied to the game's engine and source code.

Is there gonna be a patch for people who own the games on a CD...?

Probably not, I think. Just another reason to not buy anything in retail these days :P
After reading through the news article, I'm not sure I'm excited about this part though:
Stronghold Crusader HD comes packaged with content from both the Stronghold Warchest and Stronghold Crusader Extreme, including an increased unit cap of 10,000, new missions and special Tactical Powers
As far as I've read up on it, Extreme wasn't that well received, particularly because supposedly the new gameplay additions aren't well-balanced and that the AI doesn't make use of them. It would be nice if Firefly decided to fix that with this new version.

Sort of unrelated, but did GOG's version of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath ever receive the HD upgrade?

That one could be argued as necessary, seeing how buggy the original version is reported as being on AMD cards.
