So KiNgBrAdLeY7, is this what you wanted when you wrote up your little anti-steam hatchet job?
Hey guys, I don't mean to start a flame war, but let's decide cats vs. dogs for all time.

Dogs:

1. Dogs are awesome. Seriously, from their little itty bitty paws to the cuddliest noses, dogs are the best.

2. Dogs can smell fire, and actively save people from fires. Also, they fight off sharks.

3. Dog breath smells like delicious mints.

Cats:

1. I HATE CATS!!

2. CATS ARE DUMB! SERIOUSLY GUYS, SO DUMB.

3. CATS ARE LIKE GARDENERS WHO WANT TO POISON YOUR FAMILY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I approve this.
LET THE DOGS OUT!
Adding to the bashing low-repping of the OP, I'm sorry...Actually no, I am not, as you bake so you shall eat, you get what you deserve for just another GOG > Steam egotrip (?) misguided as a fair comparison, and many bias / lies to support your POV. Then again, what rep can do, just the way our GOG community thinks of you..?

Steam

1) Enables you to manage your growing library with ease, automatic updates and convenient downloads. DRM or not, if Steam ever dies it is public knowledge a way would be given for us to keep all of our purchased games.
2) Offline mode feature is effective more often than not.
3) Wrong, you can check a box in individual game properties to disallow automatic updates.
4) Without breath, nutrition you are nothing or soon so, without Internet you are, well, without internet..
5) I never had problem to keep a save folder, changing an ini file or apply a mod..
6) GOTY or original with all DLC are the same, enhanced is another product you can't expect to get free. but sometimes it is, like Witcher's and Batman, Lone Survivor..
7) Same as above, your decision to buy one or not, and also given in some lucky cases, Batman..
8) Of this I do not know, so i can't speak much but most of issues a game has is not all on Steam part, also the Publisher and Developper both share the shame, Steam for selling a defective product, publisher to apply it to their market place, dev to not work on patches.. Only broken games so far I stuck into are both Garshaft and Gorky17, this last also broken on GOG..
9) True, but sometimes it is, see Alan Wake just recently, and it was never advertised as a given.
10) Oh the Evil behind the cute face.. Yeah, no..

GOG

1) A selling argument making their pride for sure, but not decisive it was originally the oldies being taken care of for modern computers, and you can share a GOG installer to your bro, his gf and their dog too..
2) Yeah, good if you are isolated somewhere, in a fallout bunker..
3) No, the installer is at a set version number, so are the patches moving on and about in availability
4) No, you own a licence to use just like a DRM copy, game is a product of work and property of their authors.
5) Not any more or less than a Steam purchased copy..
6) Not regular enough to rule it as a given.
7) Strike Suit Zero.. Several many new releases..
8) GOG support may be a lot more friendly and effective because they can take the time for a personal reply, while Steam support must be overwhelmed 24/7.. All because of the number of users database is not comparable.
9) Not all, but more often than not, yes.. Deadly Premonition has nothing, and frankly only manuals and soundtracks are valuable extras to me. Which can be found elsewhere if you will..
10) Meh.

I'm having fun writing this, almost a guilty pleasure..

Seriously, GOG is left out starting newer games, we saw it at the Insomnia Sales the DRM Free is not a selling point for them.. My guess is because of the chore to hunt for updates now and then, and the main GOG appeal being the OLD games nostalgia, and the extras added, a sort of "homebrew" feeling, and "official" purchase hard to describe but it's here..

Steam is for the convenience of downloads and updates, providing you buy many modern games and keep an online network up as a usual thing, like so many of us do I assume, then Steam goes back to its normal state of just an interface overlay in the background...

The difference to me is in community, I don't want to join with Steam groups while GOG has a friendly vibe, like home sweet home. All explained easily because you just can't compare a small enterprise and a HUGE one, and can safely expect such things as they are..

STILL! Thank you for taking a stand, as biased as it is, for the average videogame player to let out some Steam, to express sound arguments againt the regular DRM Free crusaders, but truth prevails and what remain is, GOG and Steam they both mean business and want your money, while DRM or not the product is ANYWAY the sole and complete property of their makers. Live & learn is our meaning, have a nice day and this time a proper sorry for the somewhat harsh tone, I did not have my breakfast yet! :o

I personally prefer GOG to Steam any day. I don't like DRM - period. Unfortunately, DRM seems to have become a way of life over the past couple of years.

I offer the below points purely as "constructive criticism", in the hope that GOG would try and look into the issues and improve their service even further.

The three issues I currently see with GOG Vs Steam are -
1) GOG often fails to match Steam's prices for games they have in common or simply don't have similar offerings.

For example, I wanted to pickup the "Thief Collection" on GOG but found no offer for the same. Steam had it for as low as $4.74 a while back.

Similarly, wanted to pickup Wargame:EE but again the price difference put me off. Steam offered it for as low as $1.99 during the current sale whereas I don't think GOG has never offered it for lower than $6.66?

System Shock 2 was another similar deal. I picked it up for Steam a while ago because their price was lower than GOG's. I picked it up again on GOG as well, mainly because GOG's version is DRM FREE.

For the first time EVER, I noticed a DRM FREE game bundle on GamersGate that completely overshadowed what GOG offers for the same games. I have never seen this happen before for DRM FREE games and was quite surprised. I always believed GOG was pretty much untouchable when it came to DRM FREE game pricing. Not so anymore apparently. Even when compared individually, the games are cheaper on GG than on GOG.

I totaled GOG's current prices for the same games as included in the GG bundle and it works out to a whopping $52 (if I calculated it right). Compare this to GG's offer for the exact same games, DRM FREE to boot, for just $4.99!

As a buyer of games, I'm not complaining per se. I will happily buy DRM FREE games from -ANY- legitimate website that offers me games at a good price and provides decent service.

Its also true that no one site can claim to have the best prices across all titles but I was really surprised to see GG pull off such a stunning deal, that too for a DRM FREE pack of highly rated classic games.

In the past I have consciously paid MORE for a game (COR:Dark Athena) on GOG than on Steam simply because Steam's version had double DRM thrown in (TAGES + Steam) whereas GOG's version was DRM FREE. The Steam version actually had MP included as well, a feature that was missing in the GOG version but I still bought it from GOG.

2) GOG's games library is small in comparison to Steams.

Self explanatory. GOG needs to work harder to bring more Dev/Pubs onto its service.

3) GOG's support is really incredibly slow. Steam's is equally bad in comparison but that's hardly the point. Other sites like GG, GGG, Amazon and even GMG offer far better response times when it comes to customer support.

Case in point, I contacted GOG regarding an issue on Dec 18. That was 11 DAYS ago. Not a peep from them in reply. I finally just went ahead and bought the game in question anyway but that's another matter. 11 days is simply way too long to answer a customer's mail/query.

I know the above posts seem like I'm anti-GOG but please believe me its actually the opposite that's true. I want to see GOG do well and prosper.

Given a choice of games at the same price between GOG and any other DD service, I would buy from GOG any day of the week simply because GOG offers them DRM FREE...

KiNgBrAdLeY7: I do not intend to start a war. I hate bans, flamming, trolling, fanboyism (even though some people might see my discussion as an expression of such viewpoing) and stuff. I simply wish to compare and contrast, without having something in mind, wanting to prove anything, find or fight the good and evil, or promoting/advertizing. I like facts, arguements and civilized conversations. Let's indulge in it, then!

Steam.
1) Is actually a means of DRM protection.
2) Forces you to be always on. (Well, there is an offline mode, but nowhere near being either perfect, or entirely without faults and flaws).
3) Forces you to always have the latest update. In certain games, this is bad, because older versions were more stabilized, or simply preffered for content's sake.
4) Without having internet, you own NOTHING!
5) Games' data is not yours, not stored in your pc (permanently, or with the ability to burn and use as suited).
6) When a newer version of a game is released, like an enhanced edition or game of the year, you have to REBUY it, it does not get updated for free. Or gift your copy, ONLY if it had been purchased as a gift, and then purchase the newest package.
7) DLCs are sold separately, expensively, never released in one solid package, NEVER gifted to you. In the case of Darksiders 2, with an endless list of DLCs and their sitty price, which also never saw a compilation release containing everything in the same package, it is beyond funny, stupid or just greedy; it is, with one word, sit!
8) No refunds, no beneficial policies for the consumers' side.
9) Extras are not a given (soundtracks, wallpapers, etc.) in all titles.
10) Poses as progress, friendly and useful (linking people, accounts, helping form teams...), but this is only a frontal facade, which is unable to outweight all other negative effects...

GoG:
1) Advocates abolishing of DRM, proves actively that games as long as they are of high quality, do not need to and are not pirated.
2) The only time you really need to be connected, is only to download your games and buy them. You will NEVER again require inernet, which is a wonderful thing!
3) You are not forced to update your games fully! You patch them at your own leisure, wants and needs!
4) You own EVERYTHING you buy, without having to use the internet only to use your purchased stuff 24/7.
5) Games' data is yours to keep, in your pc, everything is used from and stored to, there! You own EVERYTHING you buy, are FULLY entitled to your rights as a consumer, and the good old law which allowed you (in bygone eras) to burn your games with one (or more) legal copies for backup and personal future use, is still in effect!
6) When a newer version is released of the same game, gog updates your copy for free, by either offering the update, or changing the games' contents themselves. They never force you to purchase same, newer title twice or more. In certain cases, they even offer the original game for free download at the extras section of the updated title!
7) With rare exceptions (the only i can think of is Omerta), dlcs are not sold separately. Always, they are in one package, either as all DLCs in one bundle, or the titles offered for sale are complete compilations, offering complete packages in one go, and most importantly, ONE, SINGLE charging! And in some cases, DLCs are even added in as a GIFT!
8) They even offer refunds, when a game cannot run with proof on your system! And they entitle you FULLY to your rights as a customer, even the ones that were abolished by the years (legal, exclusively personal copies of your stuff)!
9) All titles contain extras and goodies, making them effectively and actually digital collector's editions!
10) Does not pose, does not pretend! It IS the best deal, the best bet on the long run, but unfortunately, fewer advertizing, disbelief and immitation running rumpant on new generation gamers, and lack of extra online social touch (involving games themselves), does not do it the scale of justice it really deserves... This is the only drawback. Which is outweighted by its contradiction; they keep it real, they are who they are, they do not compromise, which is actually a pro, and the single greatest! Plus, what good is an extra online game-connection, if it is going to turn said platform and service into a cheap DRM hound, always online junk?

Agree? Disagree? On what? Your thoughts and opinions, please!
people smoke...
;)
Another big win for Steam -- Lots of my previously purchased games now work in Linux. And some I decided to purchase on GOG, like System Shock 2, work in Linux on Steam but no GOG version.

GOG, you guys really need to support Linux. If my entire Steam library, or at least the ones I care most about, all supported Linux, that would be my primary OS.
