Congrats you lucky bastard. Was a bit disappointed to see I didn't get an e-mail, but then I saw that they changed it to US only. Not sure if that makes me more disappointed or less, but it's good to know that at least one goglodyte has one and can provide info.
In addition to the media (movies, music, etc) capabilities, I'm also interested in seeing how difficult it would be to use a WINE wrapper on Windows based games. Additionally, I'd like to see if using emulators can be pulled off.
Congratulations, not a bad Christmas for you at all then. :-)

As I am not Steams biggest fan I never bothered trying to "win" one, but if you have the time it is never a bad thing to do a bit of Beta testing on this stuff.
I got my tracking info for the Steam machine, it's estimated to arrive Tuesday. In other news, Valve added most of the free games to my account. Since I had already owned Half Life 2, it gave me a HL2 gift copy. Who should I give this too? Has anyone seriously not played Half Life 2?

I haven't! I've owned it on Steam for like 2 years now too. I figured with Black Mesa project arriving I might as well, pull off a marathon but sadly when Black Mesa Project was around the corner I lost more and more interestin in shooters so I'm saving it in case I get the shooter mood back.

Surprisingly, not. (And not really trying to steal Nirth's spot, mind, just commenting.) It's a relic of my years of Steam boycotting. Quite shocking, given how much I love the first game, but I guess DRM-resistance mattered to me even then. I only ended up getting Steam for the free Portal, then only started fleshing it out after the THQ Humble Bundle. After getting more used to Steam's idiosyncrasies, I've been meaning to get HL2 one of these days, wishlisted and all, but when sales hit, there always seem to be more pressing buys. And I do like to keep some coin in the Steam wallet, still regretting having it dry for the crazy low Rome or Tomb Raider glitches. That, and I've come to realise, having played the demo and some newer shooters, how the game isn't really on the level of its predecessor, whatever these so-called "critics" might say. So, that buy is still on hold ;)

Also, question: are you going to be under an NDA (how much), or is that letter you quoted really all there is o.O

Congrats spoderman: like they said, those were some pretty incredible odds you beat. Have fun with the machine.

Congratulations,

this must mean that Steam recognizes you as a very active gamer. :)
I've owned HL2 since I bought the Orange Box back in the day when it came out. Still haven't played it :p

There aren't any NDAs. That email really is all there is. I think they're trying to get people to talk about it as much as they can, so an NDA would defeat the purpose.

Nah I was selected randomly. 30 people were selected for contributions to the community, but I know I wasn't one of them.. I don't post much on the Steam forums or anything.

Pretty sure there was some kind of community requirement to be eligible, but you could probably fulfill it by posting pictures or having a certain number of friends.

You had to have 10 friends, create a profile, and join the "Steam Universe" group to get the badge and be a candidate, but that was the only "community" requirement. What I was talking about in my previous post was actual contributions.

BTW, the package they're shipping is 35lbs. In comparison, an Xbox One + Kinect + Controller is 15 lbs.. I think they added something extra to the shipment. A few people contacted Valve about this, but were responded with "it'd kill the suspense if we told you".
