I have many games from Steam and the rate is 200K, which by the way, is the maximum rate that my internet provider supplies me. I can't tell if the rate can be faster.

MB? Or Mb? "Mb/s" means "Megabits per second", not "MegaBytes" (the "big" B indicating "Bytes", lowercase meaning "bits") . In the straight-up definition of the prefixes "Mega" and "Kilo", one "Megabit" would be about one hundred "KiloBytes" (I think; I might have misplaced a zero). In actual binary units, 1 Megabit would equal 128 KiloBytes (I know that you're not actually supposed to capitalize the "B" in the middle of the word; I'm just emphasizing the difference between bit and Byte).

Heehee, I was on mobile broadband last year, which doesn't like urban connobations, I was downloading at 600 b/s. I got timed out visiting Google... :(
To answer the question, I get around 100kb/s here in London.

Mine's a decent 680kb per sec. However, my cousin who lives in Sweden gets about 3400kbs on "bad days" he says...

Yesterday was pretty awful. Took me lot of efforts to be able to buy the one game I wanted. Couldn't download it yesterday as I kept getting errors. I've downloaded it this evening, with 280 something kb/s. That's about half the rate I'd expect .

In theory, the "Download Region" is meant to be set to a region closest to your gateway's (often indicated by your external IP address) location. I wonder, though, if one might eke out a little more speed, or even just a solid connection, by temporarily switching to a server that isn't so strained at the moment. Unfortunately, Valve doesn't release "regional" statistics when they show the "average users online" chart.

I get my top of 360 kilobytes per second here, but it drops down to 0 during certain periods. Probably because of steam sales. I'm also getting this sluggish unresponsive feel from the steam download manager..
