DaanBanana: Voted, I played the hell out of this game and it still is a high mark in the genre for me. I wrote to the dev (Cauldron) once to ask if they'd consider releasing for GOG or Steam, and they got back to me saying that it would be too expensive. Maybe at some point they'll reconsider (fingers crossed)

SirPrimalform: Too expensive? I don't thing GOG charge for their work, or rather they charge by taking a cut of sales... I don't see how re-releasing it here could be too expensive unless they mean they want to see 100% of the profits from the sales.

Perhaps you should ask if they can elaborate on where the expense lies?
This is what I got from them:

"We are happy that still people play Spellcross. Lot of people write us about Spellcross but re-release is very expensive now, so we have to wait to right opportunity."

I'll write back to them to ask if they want to elaborate. However, I assume for now that the expense they'd have is getting it to a state that would reliably work under the latest iterations of Windows, which is a problem with this game. I've not tried it myself with my copy but apparently it is hell to get it to behave under win 7 or later (and/or 64 bit OS, whichever is the problem) even using DosBox. So someone would have to dive in and fix that - his or her labour will cost money. No even sure how many of the original team is still with the company, so it could be quite a time-consuming task.

Anyway, I'll post here again if they get back to me.

That is odd. My experience with Spellcross is that it works quite well in Dosbox, even if you let Dosbox auto-detect best settings. I suffered from no real slowdown and could notice nothing wrong with the game last time I played it.
mmmm the gold lined memories :)

I have asked Cauldron about the gog release before. Basically, their reply was:

We own the IP, but the rights for publishing are in hands of the publisher. We can't do it by ourselves. Our game Chaser was added on gog.com because of Nordic Games, which have bought JoWood, because JoWood owned the publishing rights. Spellcross can be added on gog.com via a deal with Square Enix Europe, because it's them who have purchased SCi and publishing rights for Spellcross with it.

As I said before, it would be GOG who would do this and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't charge money for it. They get their money from their cut of the sales.

This makes a lot more sense. Maybe they meant expensive in terms of getting Square Enix on board.

Sorry for necroing the topic, but I am interested in Spellcross, since it was made by Slovaks and I am Czech, and it's not a bad game.

However, truly updating the game would require having the source code, which I suspect Cauldron may not even have anymore. If they do, I doubt they would release it to GOG, or rather that Sq Enix would agree to something like that. So the maintenance would have to be done by them, at their cost.
I had already voted it, and didn't remember!
This game deserved more publicity and more votes as well. So much underrated.

I don't think anyone is expecting the game to be updated. Fixing it in this case would be getting it working in DOSBox.
