GOG.com and Interplay Level up!

GOG.com has been in talks with our good friends at Interplay, and we’re pleased to be able to say that we have good news! Not only are we adding four classic games from their catalog to GOG.com in the near future, but we’re also going to give you another chance to [url=http://www.gog.com/en/promo/interplay_price_change_promo_09_11_12]save big on the games we already have for the next week!

Every silver lining has a cloud, though, and the reason that we’re putting the games on sale again is because we’re raising the prices on some of the Interplay games on the 16th of November as part of our new deal with Interplay. As such, games such as Fallout, MDK, Redneck Rampage and others may never be as cheap on GOG.com as they will be this next week. If you’ve been hesitating to pull the trigger on any classic Interplay games, now’s your last chance to buy and save big!

What are the new games that we’re adding to the Interplay collection? Well, if you know GOG.com, you know what we don’t like to give away that kind of news early, but if you’re paying attention on our website--or on any of our social media channels like , [url=http://www.facebook.com/gogcom]Facebook, , [url=http://www.youtube.com/gogcom]Google+ or even just your email inbox, you’ll be sure to find out.

So pick up our last huzzay of Interplay games at $2.99 this week, and let us know in the comments below what classic Interplay games you’re hoping will show up on GOG.com early next year--or perhaps even sooner!

serpantino: Wow that's some impressive sarcasm. Yes that's a good step but it still doesn't change the fact in the long run.
And the fact is that you could get all Interplay games for 35 $ last week (1,1$ per game), and in this promo you can get it for 3$ per game. And now you whine about future price increase...

serpantino: Why should we, the end users who gog allegedly care about so much suffer?
How are you suffering? if you really want those games now's the chance to grab them at 50% off and if you don't want them then there is no harm done. It's not like GoG just raised the price out of nowhere. Not only did we get warned in advance, we also got a nice 50% off sale, what more do you want?

Sounds like he wanted GOG to pull the entire Interplay library in order to make some pointless "statement."
I would have preferred GOG just removing the games rather than increasing the prices.

F*** statements, if people are willing to pay a certain price for a certain product then that product is worth the money*. Interplay games have been really cheap and i really don't see the problem with bringing the price to more appropriate levels. of course if the price went beyond what is set for old games, i. e. 9.99$, then I could understand an outcry.

(*) of course that logic does not apply for products which are necessary like food, but it applies to pure luxury goods such as video games.

"GOG should just terminate the agreement with Interplay!"

Yeah... I hear great businessmen are debating here
. I'd rather have some Interplay games more expensive AND new batch of Interplay titles here, than not having any Interplay games at all.

I agree. It might not be ideal, but it's much better than removing the entire library of games. One could argue that a few of those games were worth the higher price point to a lot of people anyway. Besides, if there's anything left that people want, they can jump on them now while they're on sale.

Wow so much stupidity. It's the principle of it. GOG is showing weakness and making concessions and Publishers are greedy, we all know that. Others will look at this and push for more money. I'm focusing on the long term, some people can't seem to see past their fanboyism.

That is your prediction. That is not the facts. We will see what will be. I think GOG is doing fine and Interplay is going to bust or to be sold soon. We can make a bet if you want...

There's absolutely nothing to indicate that this move will make Interplay another dime over what they were already making. You're not focusing on the long term. You're throwing a tantrum without any actual data whatsoever.

Sure, publishers are greedy (the goal is to make money, after all), but if you actually believe that every publisher out there is going to go "Well, Interplay got a few of their games sold at a higher price, so let's insist that all of our games become more expensive, as well" without any evidence to suggest that it will even work, you're completely delusional.

It's not like Interplay is jacking up the prices on their entire library. It sounds like a handful of games will bump up to the higher price point. That's hardly some large scale financial apocalypse for anybody. If a game's worth $9.99 to someone, that person will pay the price. If it's not worth that price to someone, they won't pay it. Dumping one of the larger companies on GOG over a handful of games would be a worse decision, since it would send out the message that GOG is too rigid to work with them.

Sure, if Interplay games were suddenly $15 on GOG you'd have an argument, but is there any evidence whatsoever to indicate that might happen?
What is Interplay up to these days? Did they do the MDK HD remake?

I wasn't even aware they were still making games.

That was Overhaul Games. The guys behind the Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition.
Well, if the prices are going to be raised after this sale then I guess i've sat on the fence about buying certain Interplay titles long enough. Grabbed Sacrifice (Licurg better be right about this one being good), MDK, Shattered Steel and Giants: Citizen Kabuto. I rented the Playstation 1 version of MDK long ago but never quite beat it. Oh how i've longed to finish the job. *cracks knuckles*

Good news about more Interplay titles coming too, but after looking through the list of Interplay games on MobyGames, i'm struggling to find anything worthwhile left that Interplay could bring here unless the bad reviews and my bad feelings are wrong. I seriously doubt Interplay has the rights to the old Blizzard games (Blackthorne, Lost Vikings, etc.) either. Of course GOG has surprised me by pulling great games out of left field before.

That will be a two-edged sword. Games such as Fallout, MDK, Redneck Rampage and others may never be as popular on GoG in terms of sales as they were up to that point.

Some of these games; especially the Fallouts; are very common and second-hand copies are available very cheaply (at this time, even the factory sealed Fallout Collection releases are extremely cheap). I believe that in the absence of serious compatibility issues, people will simply turn elsewhere to obtain them if they will deem it necessary.

There are plenty of choices where to buy these days.

If they still hold the licenses, these would be nice to see (of course at reasonable prices):

Wasteland;
Neuromancer;
Flashback (preferably the floppy release or better still, both releases in one package);
Heart of Darkness (can be frustrating and discouraging at times, but was obviously made with love).

Wasteland;
Well if I understand this right, EA holds the rights on Wasteland 1:

"Newport Beach, CA - July 10th, 2012 - InXile Entertainment today confirmed that Wasteland 2 will include the original Wasteland game that was released in 1987. The original RPG is considered the godfather of post apocalyptic games and went on to win numerous awards. Computer Gaming World inducted Wasteland into their Hall of Fame, and in 1996 they ranked it the #9 best game from a list of 150 games.

"The #1 request we had during our Kickstarter campaign was to have the ability to play the first game. >>>Fortunately EA has continued to support us on this project and has granted us the ability to bring the original to the players<<<," said Brian Fargo, of inXile Entertainment. "It is great to be able to make Wasteland available for those feeling nostalgic or who want to experience it for the first time. It certainly will not be a pre-requisite to understand Wasteland 2, but it adds some extra flavor if you did play the prequel."
