Could someone really explain how the mechanics works because I can't do anything after the tutorial? I understand the system about shield, armor and hull but what mix of ships I do at the moment I can't seem to beat the first green available star I jump to. Version is 1.605 in case it's different from earlier versions. I noticed that I don't have all upgrades available, I lack Engine, Missiles and something else as upgrade. I'm going to do some mining to get them but that's the last straw on my own.

Be more specific what's your issue?
the game is about zombie zerging ... you fly in a ship and it get blown up, then you fly in another ship and it gets blown up too, then you fly in another ship and wipe up what is left over.

they call the game's money like resource "rez" for a reason ... just don't go attacking hostile bases till you are significantly higher then them. try to befriend bases that have something you need (like upgrade parts) instead of attacking them, then dock and buy the parts before heading on your way out the system. eventually you will get strong enough that rolling space stations for fun is you primary goal. but early on it's a little much.

if you made it past the first jump gate then you should be capable of taking on missions in the next location, read the fin print on what job you are taking because they almost always effect your standing with a faction. so if you are taking every job you will be pissing off both factions at the same time and end up getting attacked by both.

if you are having problems with money just head back to the first system and mooch some more rez ore off the minim base like the tutorial told you to.

That's what I was afraid of. I hate using up resources like that, I don't know why but I just feel like it's a waste and lose energy to play (this is a common issue, regardless of games).

I did some mining and upgraded what I can but I'm still only level 4 so it made no difference. I now have 1300 rez at least, I'll see how it goes and read the thread you posted.
just think of your ships as remote controlled missiles ...

You need data to gain levels. There are basically three ways to gain data. Whenever you kill a ship, a few data nodes are left behind. Secondly, occasionally you'll come across a bunch of crates and spheres floating in space. Some of them contain data nodes, some contain crew members (goons), some contain rez and some are empty. Finally, some of the tasks you can perform for the UTA and civilians in the various star systems give you data as a reward for completion.

When you gain a level (i.e. when you have collected enough data), you get a number of upgrade points. Use these in the research interface to upgrade your technology levels. Try not to spend points on technologies you don't have access to anyway, meaning if you haven't bought any drone designs, don't bother to upgrade drones in the tech tree.

Technology upgrades don't automatically give you access to better equipment. You will need to purchase designs from UTA and civilian space stations in order to get the equipment. You can buy all the designs you want (if you have enough rez), but in order to use them on your ships, you will need to have a high enough tech level in the appropriate technology. Some designs come in many parts, and you will have to buy them all (from different space stations) in order to use them.

New ship designs can only be acquired by destroying ships of the particular type you are after. Like the equipment designs, you will need a number of these for each ship before you can reverse engineer the hull design completely, but once you get enough, it becomes available automatically.
I finished the part I had problems with but I just can't stand this game design. I might give it a go once or twice later but I don't think I'll have the energy to continue. It's a pity because I feel like if I only got passed this I would enjoy it a lot as everything else is great.

And yes I know about data, I'm level 6 now so I've upgraded missiles, engines and something else and I got a new ship (the ones I tried to kill).

In the beginning of the game, your main focus must be on completing the missions and gaining new ships. As you finish the missions, the mothership will get upgraded, and you'll get more and bigger hangars. New ships, you can get from conflicts between civs and UTA. If you're still to weak to fight, just go in there with 1 small ship and pick up data and blueprint as the two sides kill each other.

Interesting. I could always do some farming on the mine planets and wasting ships won't be an issue and just send in a fast ship for something like that. Thanks for the tips. :)
Also, it's not just a matter of "upgrading everything". It's very much a case of "the right tool for the right job". This means that you need to adapt your strategy to changing conditions. A ship and weapon loadout which can easily wipe the floor with one opponent, may well receive a thorough asskicking from another. Also, combat styles differ. Sometimes, standing back a little bombarding an opponent with missiles wins the day, other times getting in close and raking them with beam weapons may be the answer. Likewise, in some cases a ship with powerful shields and armor is the key to victory, in others a small fast ship is better.

Sometimes, it pays to rebuild a ship in the middle of a battle, if you find out that your loadout is poorly matched to the ships you're up against.

Also, remember to save the prints in your hangars. In each hangar, you'll notice you have A B C above it. Those are blueprints that you can save, so you don't have to re-customize every time you need to switch. Put each B of each hangar a Hatchet ship, those are the ships that are best for collecting rez from mining stations.
