sanscript: I know of it :P

It`s one of those movies like Battleship and Sky-something that ain`t much memorable, pretty bland, but a lot of fun nonetheless... Sci-Fi movies today is like that, usually.
I was looking for this movie simply because I wanted some movie about big mechs.

Then again, I expected the story to be very one-dimensional compared to e.g. the stories (or rather, the settings) in Mechwarrior games (well, Mechwarrior 2 and Mercs anyway). The normal good vs bad, young teenage heroes and teenage love, I presume.

I've seen the film twice, and I thoroughly enjoyed it both times.

Out of the three big budget blockbusters I've seen (the other two being Star Trek Into Darkness and Man of Steel), Pacific Rim is the only one I actually want to have in my home collection.

It is a film about giant mechas fighting giant monsters. It does giant mechas fighting giant monsters really, really well.

Charlie Hunnam is bad. Idris Elba is badass. And the mechas look awesome.

Star Trek Into Darkness pissed me off my squandering the potential to do something really interesting. Man of Steel pissed me off by being stupid, and having action scenes that quickly got boring. Pacific Rim kept me utterly entertained from start to finish.
I don't get why humanoid robots are so popular. For me they are extremely cheesy and have this Power Rangers vibe. I prefer when conventional army fights against giant monster, aliens etc. Eventually I would like to see movie with giant robots, but robots should look like those from Mechwarrior. I don't see anything cool about freaking Megazords.

Also if I would have to see another movie about teenagers saving world I would kill myself... Ok, I might watch "Ender's Game", but that's it!

You need to watch better mecha if all you think that it gives you power rangers vibes :P

For me it doesn't matter how good special effects are. Giant robot that resemble human will always look ridiculous for me.

This is the type of giant robot that I consider 'cool': http://img2u.info/ckgni/i/ge7e306d5.jpg

Underwhelming. Humans control big robots to fight the big baddies who come to earth via a dimensional hole in earths sea floor. Glad i didnt pay to watch it :D
I enjoyed the hell out of Pacific Rim. I was worried that it was going to be another Big Dumb Loud Mess like Transformers, but instead it felt way more like the sci-fi movies I remember from the 1990s. A serious breath of fresh air. I could see what was going on, the action was well-choreographed and made sense visually, and the script was wonderfully free of the brooding cynicism that has infected modern action flicks like a gum disease.

Is the plot dumb? Sure. Are the characters one-dimensional? Hell yes. But you know what? At least they didn't actively make the movie worse. I wasn't banging my head against the chair whenever they were onscreen and wishing they would just go away. They were bland but inoffensive, and they worked well enough that I could enjoy the excellent action scenes without having a bad taste in my mouth. And that's all I really wanted! Are you taking notes here, Hollywood? There is your minimum baseline for success: write characters that the audience doesn't actively loathe! Think you can handle that?!

Okay... okay, just needed to get that off my chest.

To sum up, Pacific Rim is a very fun bad movie. If most modern action movies were only this "bad", I would still be going to the theaters on a weekly basis instead of once or twice a year. Go see it.
I went to the cinema to see gigantic mechs fighting gigantic monsters. What I got were gigantic mechs fighting gigantic monsters with some necessary amount of exposition which was more or less stolen from different movies - the movie knew very well what it was trying to be. It seemed to gain orgasmic pleasure from showing viewers sheer power of technology and supernatural - and for that, it was awesome. It was, quite simply, full of gigantic mechs fighting gigantic monstes. Really, can't stress that enough.

keeveek: Modern take on Power Rangers, right? ;p
My first thoughts after seeing it were "That movie would be a Power Rangers movie if they were any good"

Frankly, I'm sick of those. "Oh noes, even our strongest artillery or even nuclear missiles are hardly scratching their superior technology! Oh well, someone has to go to their HQ and throw a grenade at their central fusion reactor, which will destroy the whole alien army at once.".

I don't like Transformers-like robot ballerinas that much, but I'd die to see a proper Mechwarrior movie, where the mechs really are basically slow but formidable standing tanks, as unrealistic as that still is. And with a proper MW setting with different factions, conspiracy and whatever, no black and white good and bad. And hopefully no teenage heroes and first kisses, a high-school nerd saving the world and getting the hottest girl from the high-school (hello, Transformers!).

One can always dream.

BTW, does going to 3D theater add anything positive to this movie? I'd like to get the best possible experience.

At the risk of being a troll, I personally felt some of the special effect were a little lacking.

In a way the Mechs in Mechwarrior and others similar like the Goliath in Starcraft and to a lesser degree Metal Gear REX are more realistic and more plausible than mechs like Gundams and Zoids of course, but its sort of not really necessary I mean how is having legs on a tank make it more better than treads and wheels?

He said that it's still unrealistic. But it doesn't change the fact that they look much more believable than those Megazoids :P.
I loved the movie. I went on my birthday too it with my brother and my best friend :). We really enjoyed the fight scenes. My favorite mech was the Crimson Tycoon? That one with the 3 pilots. Sadly it got destroyed so fast which made me feel bad :(. I loved those rotating blades!
I'm not picking on anyone and I didn't even read all of these post but I did see the term "unrealistic". I don't think the term "unrealistic" belongs in any conversation about this movie or anything even remotely similar. You want "realistic", go see "Schindler's List".

This is a movie about GIANT ROBOTS FIGHTING GIANT MONSTERS!!! By using a term "unrealistic" you are implying that it somehow fails to accurately portray the fighting between giant robots and giant monsters that goes on in real life.

NOW, in all fairness, if this sort of thing actually happens where you live, and you in fact don't think the movie shows these battles as they really happen, then please allow me to be the first to humbly apologize. :D

Reminds me about the argument on "photorealistic orcs", regarding the graphics of a certain MMO :)
