An American company is offering to pay a homeowner's mortgage and provide a new paintjob - all for free.

It's an incredible offer, but there's just one catch.

They'll turn your house into a giant billboard for the company - painting it with a brightly coloured ad.

California-based advertising agency Adzookie are offering the unusual deal, with chief executive Romeo Mendoza telling CNN Money they've had 5,000 inquires in two days since posting the offer on their web site earlier this week.

"Ninety percent are people who are in financial difficulty and need some help, which is understandable," Mendoza said. "The other ten percent are guys who just want to have some fun."

Mendoza got the idea when driving his daughter home from school. "I saw signs outside homes saying 'bank-owned' and suddenly I felt for the families I imagined lived there," he said.

"I was trying really hard to think of ways to help - then it hit me. Our company buys advertising all the time. We could buy ad space on their house and pay them for it."

Homeowners who sign up for the deal must agree to have their house painted for three months. Adzookie will then cover the mortgage for as long as the ad stays up. They'll even paint the house back to its original colours afterwards.

So far the company only has the budget to transform around 100 properties, with each house costing $8,000 (£4,900) to paint. Mendoza said he'll listen to people's stories before deciding who to help.

Leases, rentals and houses in areas with restrictions on bright paint jobs are not eligible.

If I agree to let them put an ad on the roof, will I get new shingles out of the deal? It's gettin' to be that time pretty soon...

I think they paint the WHOLE house not just the roof and I doubt they'd redo the shingle
If I had a house, I'd be totally game for that. Can we choose our advertisers? If so, it would have to be something exceptionally smutty (Mistress Sterns muesli bars would be best).

To not have to pay your mortgage for months, just to see your house turned into a cheap sell out, would be a good trade. However the reason I don't own a house is because I don't have any attachment to property or this whole concept of a home. I suspect that someone who did would be a bit more peeved by it.

I was joking.
I'd put a giant GOG.COM ad.
That sounds like a good deal. If I had a house I'd definitely take them up on it.

Mind if I get in line right behind you? ;)

Seriously though, this is almost as bad as that head tattoo ad thing from a few years ago. But, hey, money is money... right? I draw the line at defacing my body... but my property... meh...

I wonder what the home-owners association will say... hehe.

Your mortgage isn't paid off (like in the title) they'll just pay the mortgage for a few months while the house is painted.

"Adzookie will then cover the mortgage for as long as the ad stays up." So you'd just have to leave it painted until the mortgage was gone.
I wonder if the company said yes and you had taken a very short morgage, a few years just instead of the 15+

They're not willing to do that, according to the article, they're willing to buy space for a couple months. They're not planning to buy space for the 15-30 years most of these folks have left on their mortgages.
