Oops, I thought this was going to be a thread about a Vegas showgirl, with a sideline business.

Since it isn't, I don't mind a front end client, as long as it is not required, and it has no drm or data mining capabilities built in.

I like the idea of Steam being similar... want music, launch iTunes, want games, launch Steam. On top of that simplicity it also adds a lot of cool community features and whatnot.
Yay, it's true that a company being in a dominant position in a specific market has never ever been a bad thing and nobody with any sense should ever care about it, as long as it's convenient who cares about the rest.

That would be awesome.
That's something Microsoft should have done eons ago, either integrated in Windows or as a separate download, and provide a free SDK allowing any third party digital distributor to use it. But sadly apart from the calamitous GFWL and the anemic game launcher they never did anything.

Actually, a lot of people care about this stuff. But it happens behind the scenes. As long as everything is dandy there is no need to intervene.

How is Bell Systems doing today anyway?

Steam is pretty much going there. And the "increasing number of clients" is rather limited. Anything below EA and Ubisoft can't compete against Steam. Who knows what MS has up their sleeves but there isn't really more to it.

The biggest issue with Steam is that Valve is also a developer. Which would usually be problematic. But considering the amount of games Valve actually makes, well....

No, people yearn for a hassle free experience. They yearn for good service. That is what Steam offers. A lot of people are well aware of the possible issue and include them in their calculation. They don't throw little temper tantrums along the line of "I hate Steam threads" but the public is in general a lot more engaged than some elitist schmucks might think.

I know cases were mere housewives influenced EU legislation. It only takes one angry citizen in a rule of law state. And most companies know that.

First I thought the thread was about "I want a proper client to GOG", but apparently it was "I don't want to buy PC games outside of Steam anymore.".

I think you might eventually get what you wish for, but not in the form of Steam, but rather the Windows Store.

Anyway, if simplicity is what you are after, you should really consider jumping ship to console gaming (at this point I think it means MS, ie. XBox360). It is specially designed for people like you and SimonG who just want user-friendliness and simplicity from their gaming.

Nothing wrong with a little helper tool that assists you in downloading your games. Whenever somebody buys more than 10 download only games, this wish should arise naturally. I have it myself and curse GOG for not having an "automatic download and update installer functionality".

It doesn't mean you give any control away like with Steam of EA or Ubisoft. The difference is still there.
