Hey guys, my dad and I used to be avid space/flyer game players. We loved the Descent series as well as another game that neither of us can remember the name of but we remembered playing it a lot. I was hoping if I described a bit of it someone could perhaps give a name?

From what we remember the case had a ton of CDs (6+) and the whole premise of the game was flying different ships of any size in fleets. You could go from as small as a bomber to as big as a capital ship with different armaments. It had tons of missions but we can't remember if it had a free fly mode or not. The UI also was sometimes intuitive while also counter-intuitive such as locking onto an asteroid instead of a fighter or even a communications tower. And as other space games it had lots of "hyperdrive" scenes where the fleet would warp into hostile space.

We can't really remember much other than what we used to do and how much fun we had with it as well as the fun we'd poke at its enormously thick case sometimes. Anyone think they know this game?
More details please. Did it have cinematics? Can you tell us anything about the story?
That many CDs... either it was Wing Commander 3 or 4, or some full-motion video game set in space? Or do you mean 6 floppy disks?

Was it on PC, or consoles?
Starlancer?
Yeah confused

Cant even lock on to the genere

Ships, Asteroids, fleets etc - if it was an RTS you could almost say Homeworld

If still in RTS land it could be Imperium Galactics II which was 4 disks

Floppy - Cd, DVD, Genere - need more info please

Im betting some sort of Wing Commander as others have guessed or Freespace 1 or 2 varient from the sounds of it
It might have also been Privateer 2. That's why I am asking about the story.

So... were there any huge cats in this game? :)

That was my first guess. But as said more information is needed. :)
Sorry guys, I had my calculus final shortly after I posted this. Anyways what more details I can give are:

It was not an RTS genre, it was a ship simulator from what I remember, you had some level of customization of ships.
Also it was actually 3 CDs, not floppies or DVDs, this was before DVDs even existed.
The game was strictly space combat with cut scenes as there was a campaign with (two?) factions. It's honestly hard to remember too many more details until I can talk to my dad to see what he can remember about it.
However, looking into some of the replies I do believe Freespace is the most accurate from what I remember of the game, so it might be just that.

I believe what confused me about the game is that we had both Freespace 1 as well as Freespace 2 and had kept all the CDs in the same case. But after looking at screenshots and videos of both games it looks like "Freespace" is the proper game, thanks guys.
