michaelleung: In Japan, Honda ships snow from northern Europe countries for its winter driving test track in the summer.
avatar
Wishbone: Let me get this straight. They ship tons of frozen water from one side of the planet to the other? I am... speechless.

Yes, I have a copy of the Car Magazine issue that describes it, and I quote: "When real snow is out of season, Honda ships it in and sprays it around..." Just for the winter test tracks!

But that doesn't say "from northern Europe". There is permanent snow significantly closer to Japan than that.
Still, shipping it in from whereever still sounds ridiculous. Snow machines have existed for a long time. Why not use them?

The snow's not real! It's not snow!
That's odd. Why does it look like a piece of land to the left (Ireland i suppose) has some green in it?. It's like the snow only fell on Britain. That or photoshop did. Though I'm not entirely sure if that batch of green is land or the open sea. Don't really know how far Ireland is from Great Britain.

As far as I'm aware, the snow is coming down from the north/NE, so by the time it gets across the UK, there isn't any snow left for Ireland. Bit difficult to tell from that picture about Northern Ireland, but it does seem like the south hasn't got snowed on.
On the subject of football matches, the clubs must consider that if they played their matches currently, their attendances would be terrible. So, in order to maximise supporters (and therefore income) they ask for the matches to be postponed.
Ha. That is awesome.
huh... that pic looks like scene from that movie...
It always snows in the UK when I'm not there. When I was there in the winter, it never bloody snowed in the South East >_<.

The clubs have no power over that decision whatsoever. Matches cannot be postponed or abandoned except with the approval of the referee due to a serious pre-game or in-game incident, or by order of the police or other authority with such statutory powers.
In this case, the authorities have called for the matches to be postponed because of the weather conditions causing public safety concerns.

I'm in the South London area... have about 5 inches in the back yard at the moment and it's been snowing on and off since tuesday night with temperatures about 0C during the day (never about 1) and mostly about -2 to -4C.
Had to work from home on Wednesday and Thursday (although I did make it as far as Clapham Junction before a lack of trains meant I had to turn round and head home... damn you Southwestern Trains!) and Friday I was in the office for a little over half a day before heading home to avoid being stuck....
Current forecast here is heavy snow in the next hour or so till tomorrow morning and light snow solid all the way through Monday night.....
Have a feeling I'll be remoting into work on Monday too ;)
I'm in the middle of it, here in the South. It sucks. I can't ride my bloody bike!

My flat is 5 floors up and is basically the roof of the building I'm in. All my outside walls are a little slanted (they go further out at the bottom and come closer in at the top). So all my windows have been able to get completely covered in a thick layer of snow, haven't been able to look out my windows for about 2 weeks now.

Cryxo: I tell you, in the UK when there it snows, everything slows down to a halt.
It's @!*$ing ridiculous! In places in Europe it is illegal to not have snow tyres and it is a bloody damn good move.

That's because they rarely don't have snow. You can hardly demand people get snow tyres here when there's barely ever any of it.

Yeah, me too. When I was a kid there was snow every winter, feet and feet of if often... but recently it never snowed.... except after I left.
I was talking to someone in japan recently about how my house was on top of a huge country hill, so driving down was always pretty dicey in winter. They asked why we didn't have snow tires / snow chains.
I have no idea... it's just something that never occurred to us. Not that i've ever even seen them offered for sale...
Might have been useful ;-)

Yeah, I don't think I ever seen snow tires/chains sold in the UK. Certainly never noticed then in Halfords or similar places. I remember when I was around 7ish and having to take a small pick axe to the road to smash ice so we could get the car out. But I think that was the last time ever had a huge amount of snow while I was there =(.
Last time I saw a huge amount of snow was winter 1999 while I was living in Kanazawa. That was fun, considering I lived at the top of one of the mountains. Getting down that on the bus was an experience to say the least. I lost track of how many times the bus actually had a minor crash =/.
That was also the first time I ever saw a thunder storm while it was snowing. Snow and lightening at the same time is still rather a strange sight for me.
