I only like RE 1 & 2 (didn't play 3) where they're still survival horror games.

(I'll post here seeing as I can't find any more RE4 HD topics.)
So, has anyone played this more or less in-depth? How is it on a technical level? Do the mouse+keyboard controls make sense this time around?
I'm just looking for info on whether they messed anything up big time, like in the Silent Hill 2 "HD" edition, and reviews like "Resident Evil 4 is one of my favorite games ever!!!1" aren't helpful.
This would be my first time playing RE4 for more than 15 minutes and I want to know if this HD edition is the way to go, or should I spend four hours sticking mods to the original horrible PC version until it looks and plays tolerably. ;)
