GOG has done a wonderful job of bringing back old computer games that were previously either impossible to find, or ridiculously expensive considering their age. But I'm thinking that there are many great, old games that aren't computer games.

I was thinking how awesome it would have been if someone (preferably GOG) re-released old console games online, bundled with an emulator (like they do with old games and DOSBox today). There are many games from back in the days that I either haven't played or haven't finished, and to be able to play them again on my computer (with a controller, for those of us who owns one,) would be nothing short of awesome.

Of course, one could always go through the trouble of buying the consoles and the games like one did back in the days, but this poses many problems for me (and probably most other people).
A) I don't own a TV.
B) Even if I did, it would probably not be compatible with all the consoles I'd like to get my hands on.
C) It can be pretty difficult to find a console that still works.
D) It can be pretty difficult to find games that still work.
E) Both the console and the games can be ridiculously expensive.
F) Some console games have zone restrictions, something that doesn't mix well with my being a European living in the States, who finds herself flying back and forth regularly.

I have downloaded emulators for the consoles I have and created images of my games, but there are many more games I'd love to own. (For example, I don't have either Silent Hill or RE for my PS1, both of which I'd love to own.)

I realize that many of the most popular titles of previous consoles are re-released on newer consoles, but that doesn't really help those of us who find ourselves traveling a lot. For me (and many others, I believe) it would simply be more convenient to be able to play these games on our computers.

What do all of you guys think? Would it be awesome to be able to grab old console games online and play them on our computers?

there's quite a lot of sega games on steam
Something like an unbundled "Intellivision Lives" would be pretty cool.

Fat chance seeing something like that for the more popular consoles though. :( Selling us new ports of the old classics every generation is part of the business model.
That would be awesome but GOG has so many PC classics missing that I just don't see it happening. Really the only way is buy the consoles or just pirate them and hope you can own them on the PC legally some day.

Wow, I've never even heard of this console before. I guess that's what I get for being born in 1990. :)

Seeing how today's companies believe that user friendliness equals loss of income, I think you're right.

That being said - there's a plethora of things being offered to those who buy re-releases of old games to this generation of consoles that aren't available to those who buy the original game, like better graphics and co-op support, for example. Besides, most people seem to prefer to play a Playstation game on, well, an actual Playstation.

Basically, re-releasing old console games online would enable people like me, who for various reasons are unable or unwilling to invest in consoles, to spend our money on console games anyway.
It will not happen in a million years that I will invest in both a TV and one or more consoles when I have to worry about things like luggage weight limits, compatibility issues between American and European power outlets, difference in voltage in the US\Europe, and not to mention zone restrictions on games and consoles. This doesn't mean I don't want to play console games, it just means I am unable to when today's options are what they are.

Absolutely, I did not mean to imply that GOG simply stop releasing computer games and shift to console games instead.

While I am not demanding that GOG be the service providers of these console games, I would be very thrilled if they were. In a time where most companies see their customers as bags of money that are waiting to be emptied, I find myself becoming less and less willing to spend my money where I fear they will be invested in customer hostile DRMs.
