Any amount less than whatever amount of rep I have at the time is fine and fair, any amount greater is ridiculous and an outrage

Can somebody explain to me how the rep system exactly works? What I have figured out so far:
If I post one time every day, I get +1 rep just for posting. If I post more than once per day, I only get +1 for the first post. Assumingly this works in cycles of 24 hours. And every time one of my posts gets rated plus or minus, I gain or lose one point of rep.
Is that correct? And what about the stars? Are these like grades for a certain amount of rep? Or is there more behind them?
I don't really care much about it or intend to boost my rep, so I never took a close look into this. Still, sometimes I wish I was more active on the forums, but I prefere to communicate in my native language. Out of interest: Does somebody know if there is a general German-speaking thread around here? Can't rely on the crappy forum search...

I'm not sure about the specifics of the repping system, but stars come when you reach a certain number of rep points like 1star = 50, 2 star (150?). Not sure about the rest, I haven't been paying close attention.

The required rep should be up to the person doing the giveaway. But i think 100 rep is fair enough.
