Bringing back the best traditions of eXtraterrestrial COMbat!

Xenonauts, the spiritual successor to the classic 1990s X-Com games bringing back and expanding all of their strategic depth and tactical greatness, is available on 20% off on GOG.com. That's $19.99 for the first week!

Xenonauts is a spiritual successor to the classic X-Com strategy games from the 1990s. We aim to improve the graphics, add new content and streamline the interface whilst still retaining all of the key mechanics of the original games. Devoted fans should love this game, but we're also keen to introduce the joys of old-school grand strategy to a whole new generation of players who might not otherwise experience it! In this robust strategy game you control a multi-national military organisation defending a Cold War-era Earth from an alien invasion, using small squads of persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their technology in turn-based ground combat. A detailed strategic layer allows you to co-ordinate the defence of the planet, using your interceptors to shoot down UFOs and researching captured artefacts to learn about your foes and unlock new combat equipment to use on your missions. The game comes with a full MP3 sountrack!

The alien overlords' plan was as simple, as it was brilliant: "wait for the 2014 DRM-Free Summer Sale to start on GOG.com, and conquer the Earth with minimum resistance while everyone is busy tracking the Flash Deals". Stay vigilant, defender of our home planet! Only you can foil the extraterrestrials' scheme and show them that the human race is not to be messed with, in Xenonauts, for $19.99 on GOG.com. The 20% off special release discount will last until Monday, June 23, at 1:00PM GMT.

CatShannon: Great release!

I already own the game and think it is highly recommendable.
It works fine on Linux through Wine, albeit I'd have preferred a native version.
Devs are using wine too for linux/mac, they have no native version (yet)...
...i need more money :)...a oity i lost my heart to this new gem..ohterwise i could sell it *g*

zeroxxx: How does Xenosauts stand against OpenXCOM and XCOM EU+EW? In terms of quality, of course.

Kardwill: EU+EW feels like an action movie. Quick paced, scripted, nice graphics. But less freedom regarding what you can do (only one base, a soldier can carry only one grenade, very little control over some parts like aerial combat). It is heavily scripted, which can be a good thing (It conveys a sense of story, some scripted missions break the routine, the specialized soldiers with special powers have a flavor that generic-marine-with-different-stats don't have ...) or a bad thing (it gets repetitive on second playthrough). Graphics are nice and animated, which give it a living (if slighly cartoony) feeling. Gameplay has been simplified (for example 2 actions in place of action points) and "protects" the player (when an alien first sees your men, it will often take cover, giving you a round to react), which can be a good or bad thing, depending on your preferences.

For what little I played, Xenonauts feels like the old game. More freedom of choice (in your equipment loadout, possibility to build secondary bases around the world with their own teams, in the way you will treat the UFO menace, during air combat), slower paced (more soldiers on big maps, fewer scripted attacks, you can only attack UFOs in the radar range of your bases so if you have a base in Sicily and most action happens around Australia, you'll have to wait). It is more realist, more "organic" in the sense of what should happen will happen regardless of script or fairness (meaning it can be pretty harsh when your men get machine-gunned down just after jumping out of the chopper simply because an alien happened to be nearby, but it is harder to exploit a repetitive script like in EU). Graphically, the game gives a more "static" feeling, and while the resolution is good, I find it bland (I prefered the cartoony look of the original)

Overall, EU/EW holds your hand and gives you a good ride. Xenonauts (or the original game) drops you in the middle of a war, gives you the tools to fight, and lets you swim or sink. Both styles have their merits.
Your choice :)
Very nice explanation ... +1 for you Kardwill. However I couldn't play new XCOM at all (I tried the demo), because of that "holding your hand approach" - you can move your soldier twice only in a turn (or move and shoot) - so you have to be sure where you want to go... Not like it was with the X-COM (the original one) - where you have action points and you can make lots of decisions (like equipping your planes, soldiers, bases, etc...) - that micromanagement was fascinating for me and I'm so glad that finally my hunger for a proper X-COM remake will be satiated after so many years... Thanks GOG and Goldhawk Entertainment!
After playing several ground missions last night (on just Normal difficulty)....very challanging if you don't think or plan ahead....I also love that you can shoot your own men (unlike in XCOM EU/EW)... accidently of course ;}
Men will die.... Countries will leave.... all part of alien war I guess

Agreed. I played for a couple of hours last night. I was zapping alien scouts out of the air left and right, and started thinking that this game was way too easy. Suddenly, the scouts were larger and had escorts, and my squadrons were going down constantly. Same thing with the ground missions. At first I was taking out the aliens with ease, but after a few missions it started getting harder... a lot harder. The game definitely seems to highlight the case for war escalation. The game gives you just enough time to get your feet wet, then all hell starts breaking loose, just like it would with an alien invasion. I dig it.

There are a few things that need improving. Tool tips don't always show up, and when they do they sometimes offer only vague explanations. Ground missions also seem to need some work. Alien laser fire gets buffed a bit too quick. Within 3 or 4 ground missions I had aliens shooting my troops from blind positions on the other side of the map. Maybe it's to emphasize the superiority of alien tech, but to me it's almost like the aliens get put on god mode.
Wishlisted.

I suppose I should read the manual (like the good old days)... :) I like being the underdog....kind of goes against my "don't lose any soldiers" mentality, but I can change that soon... In the original, I remember killing my own soldiers that got mind controlled all the time...hehe...
Already have the game on steam, but will get it here as well.
Played it a little in alpha/beta and will probably enjoy it more now that its finished.
One of the only three games I alpha-funded. (the other being Kenshi and Underrail)

Xenonauts delivers the x-com. Period.
The Devs have done great, and wish them many sales.

Smannesman: What's with all the 'thanks for bringing the game here' posts?
I'm fairly certain the developers approached GOG, not the other way around.
Iirc, game was refused entry to GOG few years back due to high price tag. GOG had just started accepting indies and was strugling to decide what to do with new price ranges. 25$ was considered too high price for indie at the time. Game was originally aiming for end of 2012 release so it's been seriously delayed and state of development at the time might have played part in original refusal. Only GOG knows. ;-p

Doesn't really matter now. Game is on here on official release day and I hope for the best for both the game and the dev. Wishlisted for now as my backlog needs shrinking and probably get game or two from the ongoing sale.

Not to derail, but how is Kenshi? I spotted it on Amazon about 6 months back. I hate to admit it, but $20 seemed a bit steep at the time (still listed as "Open Alpha") but I've always thought about going back and grabbing it at some point as it looks right up my alley (Wasteland Meets Jagged Alliance Meets Mount and Blade was the "vibe" I got).

Not do derail too ;)

Kenshi is a bit too alpha IMO. Got it for little money way back on Desura. The overall Idea of Kenshi is indeed a bit Jagged Alliance meets Japanese New Age Ronin movies meets sandbox and tons of skills and crafting.
Right now i can suggest you wait a bit more. Or try the demo.

Gydion: It's a TBS game?

micktiegs_8: The global strategy is realtime with the option to pause, but yeah the ground combat is turn based.
All right, I stand corrected :) Even more intriguing now...
Just noticed Kardwill's writeup - great job! As a fan of both EU and XCOM you hit the needle on the head when it comes to the ups and downs. While I have yet to grab Xenonauts I'm sure I will before long - XCOM is one of my all time favs and I've been on a TBS kick anyway.

Also thanks for the response myxale - I didn't know there was a demo, I might give it a shot. Hopefully the game gets fleshed out before long and sees a "full" release sooner rather than later.
I was waiting the final realease many months!!! And for my surprise instead of need to buy it on STEAM I can buy it here, Thanks GOG!
